32BJ’s political program is rooted in a strong commitment to engaging 32BJ members in all levels of the political process. This participation takes the form of member volunteerism and leadership in electoral and legislative campaigns (both volunteer and paid); participation in political education activities including the Social Justice Leadership Academy; and encouraging members to participate in the American Dream Fund (ADF), the Union’s PAC.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The Political Organizer (PO) is based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and is responsible for aspects of the Union’s political work in Western PA. They are primarily responsible for aspects of the Union’s campaign to empower and educate members on our political program. Additionally, the PO executes pieces of the Union’s legislative and political program under the direction and supervision of the Pennsylvania-Delaware Political Director.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Coordinating the district’s member political engagement program, which focuses on training members on social justice issues that impact the membership;
- Building and maintaining positive relationships with Union officers, elected officials, community and labor leaders, and other potential coalition partners;
- Working with the State Political Director to implement a statewide public policy and political agenda;
- Monitoring and coordinating aspects of legislative and policy reform initiatives that effect the Union, worker’s rights, and social justice;
- Supporting Field Representatives in their political outreach to members, as needed, to develop member interest in the Union's political program; helps make the case for action and involvement, including participation in the Union’s Political Action Committee (PAC);
- Planning events to engage members in the political work of the Union;
- Planning and coordinating campaign activities, grassroots lobbying, phone banking and events for our campaigns as needed;
- Supporting campaign tactics, including rallies, press events and targeted member activity;
- Tracking and managing regular member voter registration and PAC sign-up campaigns;
- Providing briefings and education materials for staff and members around legislative and electoral work;
- Coordinating regional activity with staff working on national campaigns.
QUALIFICATIONS
- 2 to 3 years of experience in worker or community organizing, legislative, or electoral campaigns
- Experience working with directly impacted people
- Ability to train and teach people of varying skillsets around economic and social justice issues
- Ability to plan and execute large-scale events with the support of the Political Director
- Ability to design and implement powerful and effective campaign plans with the support of the Political Director
- Excellent communications skills and experience building strong working relationships with various stakeholders
- Fluent written and oral Spanish preferred but not required
- The ability and willingness to travel and to work long hours, including evenings and weekends as campaigns require
- This position requires the regular use of a car, to travel to various locations throughout Western PA; a valid driver’s license and the use of a car is required. The Union provides a $200 weekly car allowance in accordance with policy.
COMPENSATION & BENEFITS
The salary for this role is $61,770 annualized. 32BJ provides a benefits package that includes employer-paid medical, dental and vision plans, for full-time employees and their qualified dependents, and retirement benefits, including a defined benefit pension plan and 401K. The Union currently offers a remote work policy of one remote day per week at the discretion of the manager.
