Part-Time Temporary Organizer

Based in Minneapolis, MN
Minneapolis Federation of Teachers, Local 59 (MFT) is a union of teachers, other licensed staff and Educational Support Professionals (ESP) working in Minneapolis Public Schools. MFT is affiliated with Education Minnesota, the American Federation of Teachers, and the National Education Association and represents about 4500 staff members in about 70 schools and educational programs in Minneapolis.
Temporary MFT Organizers will add additional capacity in executing our contract campaign. These organizers will primarily support the work of site-level stewards and Contract Action Team (CAT) members. MFT will seek to hire two part-time positions, roughly half-time (0.5 FTE) each. These positions will be hourly, will not be benefit eligible, and will pay $25-40 per hour depending on experience.
Major Duties and Responsibilities
- Identify, recruit, train, develop and support Contract Action Team (CAT) members and other worksite leaders;
- Work to ensure worksite leadership is representative of all member races, ages, gender, and other identities;
- Educate worksite leaders and rank and file members on our bargaining demands and the campaign that will be required to win them;
- Work with affiliates and partner organizations on the development and successful implementation of our common good demands;
- Maintain visibility with the membership through building visits;
- Establish and maintain a positive working relationship with the membership;
- Provide advice and appropriate professional assistance to members;
- Recruit non-members to be members;
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Experience fighting for racial and social justice;
- Experience working with a wide variety of populations, personalities and viewpoints;
- Experience leading, motivating and collaborating with union members and leaders;
- Experience collaborating with community partners;
- Experience in contract enforcement and handling grievances;
- Experience in collective bargaining campaigns and negotiations;
- Experience in organizing non-members into membership;
- Experience in worksite organizing;
- Effective and efficient utilization of time management, work plans, and implementation of plans to meet objectives and goals;
- Creative problem solving and decision-making skills;
- Ability to work irregular/extended hours as necessary and function with a high degree of independence;
- Effective oral and written communication skills;
- Experience with Microsoft Office;
- Driver’s license and daily access to a vehicle.
These positions will last through spring 2024, with the possibility of further extension.
