You will work closely with CWA affiliates across the country and have opportunities to collaborate with other teams within CWA including Communications, Organizing, Political, and Research on data-based projects.
CWA members work in telecommunications, information technology, the airline industry, news media, broadcast and cable television, education, health care and public service, law enforcement, manufacturing and other fields.
The Data Specialist works in the Secretary-Treasurer's office with the Director of Data and Information Systems and reports to the Deputy Director of Data & Portfolio Management. In this role, you will have a rare opportunity in a new position to develop and implement data strategy at one of America's most progressive labor unions.
Responsibilities
In this role, you will primarily engage with CWA's membership and dues processing system and our convention management system, collaborating with affiliates across the nation who rely on these systems as well as internal partners and stakeholders.
- Work with affiliates to promote engagement and understanding of the national membership and dues processing system (Aptify)
- Provide recommendations on development priorities for Aptify
- Execute user acceptance testing on new features and bug fixes
- Administer, support, and train users with various levels of technical expertise
- Write scripts to generate membership reports
- Collaborate with staff and affiliates in developing strategies, data processes, and reporting to accurately measure progress toward maintaining and using membership data
- Integrate and analyze membership and dues data from a variety of sources to support CWA's membership growth, retention and engagement goals
- Work with leadership and staff to establish standards for data collection, acquisition, preservation, analytics, and hygiene
- Work collaboratively across CWA in addition to vendors and other partner organizations
- Perform data analysis of key problem areas to assist in root cause assessment
- Contribute to ongoing data architecture processes and governance
- Research and collect data to assist with product development and evaluation
- Prepare and maintain data reports, lists, training materials, presentations, and other documentation
Required Skills and Experience

- Ability to manage data for a large member- or donor- based organization
- Moderate or better SQL skills and experience utilizing data warehouses with a desire to learn more
- Ability to deliver the highest level of user support and user satisfaction
- Proactively identifies ways to avoid recurrence of user issues and decrease complaints and escalation
- Experience with digital data platforms, user interface design to maximize usability and end-user experience
- Ability to perform acceptance testing experience to evaluate if specific feature requirements meet expectations
- Ability to create clear and professional reports that are easily understood by non-technical audiences
- Experience and a passion for coaching and empowering individuals with varying technical proficiencies to become more confident users
- Solid interpersonal skills which include active listening, problem-solving, knowledge-sharing, teamwork, responsibility, leadership, motivation, flexibility, patience and empathy
- Communication and relationship-building skills including the ability to communicate technical subjects to non–technical stakeholders and trainees

- Familiarity with online and electoral tools and datasets such as Catalist, VAN, and other constituent relationship management tools like Action Network
- Experience with programming language(s) such as Python or R
- Experience with data visualization tools such as Tableau, Periscope, or Google Data Studio
- Experience working with APIs
- Experience working with Civis Platform
- Experience with Agile methodologies and Jira
- Experience with automated ETL processes
- Experience working in an organization with a federated structure
- Knowledge of labor union membership and dues structures
In addition you should be comfortable with using the Microsoft Office suite and GSuite/Google Apps. The selection process for this role will include a SQL skills assessment.
Job Specifications
- Salary: $55,988 - $93,313
- Position is based in the CWA HQ in Washington, DC with the ability to work remotely anywhere in the United States. Must generally be available for meetings from 9-5 Eastern time.
- Position covered by the Guild Contract with CWA
