Emergency Substitute Teacher Support Specialist
(Temporary 1-Year)
Based in Federal Way, WA
Overview:
The Emergency Substitute Teacher Support Specialist will support several projects focused on supporting Washington state’s Emergency Substitute Teachers, as well as fully certificated substitute teachers. In this role, the Emergency Substitute Teacher Support Specialist will lead the implementation of online and in-person professional development, regional community engagement events, member outreach and organizing, and career coaching. The Emergency Substitute Teacher Support Specialist will support a multi-year, grant-funded initiative focused on educator quality and new career pathways. This is a full-time, temporary 1-year position.

Responsibilities:
- Lead ongoing implementation of Emergency Substitute Teacher organizing project, coordinating a team of member leaders with outreach.
- Assess and analyze the professional development needs, interests, and demographics of Emergency Substitute Teachers to inform program development.
- Coordinate the design and implementation of in-person and online professional development for Emergency Substitute Teachers and certificated substitute teachers.
- Develop and implement career coaching program to support Emergency Substitute Teachers interested in seeking full teacher certification.
- Facilitate SubCommunities affinity groups for Emergency Substitute Teachers and other certificated substitutes around Washington state.
- Recruit, onboard, retain, and train diverse groups of educators to participate in the EST project.
- Infuse cultural competency, diversity, equity, and inclusion into the EST projects.
- Uphold student-centered, evidence-based instructional practices that keep schools at the center of our Washington communities.
- Coordinate with and participate in shared work with WEA Teacher Residency staff and member leaders.
- Provide support to school district/local association partners to develop community-based partnerships supporting the WEA Teacher Residency.
- Provide support, as needed, to staff in WEA centers with substitute affiliation and membership efforts.
- Collaborate on several multi-layered projects with abstract parameters, including work with and support for highly diverse members, trainers/training teams, and staff colleagues.
- Support and maintain positive relationships with external state and national partners and organizations focused on educator career pathways.
- Other duties as assigned.
Experience and Requirements:
- Current or recently expired (within 3 years) Washington state teaching and/or substitute teaching certificate (or another state’s or country’s equivalent) and related teaching experience (at least 5 years).
- Extensive understanding and application of classroom teaching and learning skills, including evidence-based and inclusionary practices.
- Extensive background and experience with adult learning, coaching and mentoring.
- Established work experience with school districts, local associations and state education agencies.
- Demonstrated ability to lead diverse teams of educators to develop and deliver high-quality curricula, instructional materials, and assessments.
- Strong project management skills, with the ability to juggle multiple, complex projects with competing deadlines.
- Understanding of educator quality policy, educator certification and educator career pathways.
- Ability to successfully work with, learn from, communicate with, and support diverse individuals and groups which includes establishing an equity and inclusionary lens; history of success working with communities of color or with other historically under-represented groups.
- Proficiency using Microsoft Office Suite and Office 365 (Microsoft Access, Excel, PowerPoint and Word, Teams, SharePoint, and OneDrive).
- Asset-based mindset and ability to develop and maintain cooperative, productive workplace relationships.
- Demonstrate initiative and ability to effectively handle multiple, complex assignments and lead with a solution-oriented approach amidst changing priorities.
- Lead with strong attention to detail and effective project management skills.
- Must support and advance the WEA mission, goals, core values and priorities.
- Must reside in WA state.

Supervision: The successful incumbent will function as a member of the Governance Team and will report to the Dean of Educator Career Pathways Program.
