Associate General Counsel

The Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) has an immediate opening for an attorney in the ATU Legal Department.

Under the direction of the General Counsel, the Associate General Counsel will work with the Legal Department to provide advice to international and local union officers and staff on a wide variety of legal, regulatory and administrative matters. The department provides guidance and counsel on matters of internal union governance, including compliance with the international and local union constitutions, the LMRDA and DOL regulations. It provides guidance and counsel also on pertinent federal, state and provincial labor, transportation, employment and employee benefits law.

Department attorneys assist strategic organizing, bargaining and legislative campaigns, including by performing research and advising on a wide range of policy issues. Policy issues addressed by the Department include transit funding, electrification of transit fleets, autonomous vehicles, transportation network companies, privatization, commercial driver’s licenses requirements, drug and alcohol testing, safety and other matters of public concern.

Applicants must have a demonstrated commitment to the rights of working people. Preferred applicants will have three or more years of experience in labor law. Litigation experience before the NLRB, state labor relations boards, federal and state courts, and arbitrators is preferred. Non-attorney experience in public policy, legislation, strategic campaigning and organizing will be considered. The applicant should have excellent research, writing and analytical skills, be able to multi-task and manage multiple projects, be capable of handling assignments with minimal supervision, and work well in a collegial setting with other attorneys and staff.

The Amalgamated Transit Union was founded in 1892. It is the largest labor organization representing transit workers in the United States and Canada with 190,000 members in over 200 local unions spread across 46 states and nine provinces.

The Associate General Counsel will work out of the ATU’s headquarters in Silver Spring, Maryland. There is a two-day per week telework option after a probationary period.
