DC Hotel Workers Rising: Summer Organizing Cohort

Based in Washington, DC

Inflation is skyrocketing, corporate greed is out of control, and the 1% have only gotten richer. But workers in D.C. hotels are organizing and fighting back. Workers in D.C. recently launched a city-wide organizing campaign, and we need your help to win!

UNITE HERE Local 25 is recruiting students who want to spend this summer building power with hotel workers and learning how to be labor organizers. This program will train you on basic and advanced organizing skills through shadowing and close work with our staff organizers. You will be part of a cohort of other students who you’ll meet with regularly for trainings, discussions, and social opportunities. You will learn to organize people to stand up for their rights and build worker-led committees to take on multi-national corporations.

We believe that students have a vital role to play in labor organizing and incredibly useful skills to bring to bear in this campaign. Our goal is to not only organize non-union workers and win campaigns, but also to train effective progressive labor leaders and organizers who can develop creative and strategic campaigns to change the economic balance of power in North America.

Requirements:

  • Strong commitment to social justice and passion for building working class power
  • Ability to work in Washington D.C., Northern Virginia Montgomery County, or Prince George’s County.
  • Ability to work in diverse environments and build relationships with people from a wide variety of different backgrounds
  • Willingness to work long and irregular hours, including evenings and weekends

Candidates who possess any of the following skills or experiences will be given preference:

  • Experience working in the service industry and/or hotels
  • Proficiency or fluency in Spanish or Amharic
  • Labor organizing experience
  • Flexible scheduling
