Overview
The following shall constitute the primary duties and responsibilities of this position. It is by no means intended to represent all duties and responsibilities attributed to this position.
General Duties/Responsibilities:
- Meet the goals of the Department as established by the SMART Strategic Plan and comply with all directives and assignments by the Director and the Government Relations Representative, as well as any assistance necessary in fulfilling their duties.
- Aids and supports the department on all governmental and legislative initiatives.
- Knowledge of Capitol Hill and the legislative process.
- Assists with compliance, tracking and reporting for federal, state and local political races.
- Track political and legislative developments and assist with hosting/attending political fundraising events.
- Assist with analyzing legislation and drafting written materials to support the work of the department, which includes membership communications, legislation, talking points, fact sheets, press releases, congressional testimony, and regulatory comments.
- The Government Relations Assistant may also perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications and Mandatory Skill Set
- The following shall constitute the mandatory skill set for the position of SMART, Government Relations Assistant and by no means is intended to represent all skills or skill levels obtainable or desirable for holding this position. This list is simply a point from which to build on. Knowledge in lobbying to advance the policy agenda of a labor organization, trade association or non-profit on Capitol Hill.
- Medium to advanced knowledge of Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft PowerPoint software.
- Knowledge of Building Trades policy issues, a passion for the labor movement, existing relationships with key House and Senate Members and Staff, are a plus.
- Must be able to successfully pass a full back ground check.
Physical Requirements:
The physical demands described here represent those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. In compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), the following criterion must be met:
- Use of computer keyboard; and
- Sitting/standing for long periods and ability to travel by various means, such as trains, planes, and automobiles.
- Must be able to lift up to 20 pounds.
