Political Coordinator

Overview
UNITE HERE Local 25 is a progressive labor union which represents over 6,500 politically active hotel and casino workers in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan region and the State of Virginia.
Local 25 is currently seeking applications for a Political Coordinator. This is an excellent opportunity for a talented and highly motivated professional who would like to play a significant role in promoting the collective empowerment of hospitality workers, and in strengthening the labor movement in the D.C. metro region.
The Political Coordinator will be responsible for working with the Political Director to plan and implement the Union’s electoral, political and legislative program. The primary goals of the of these programs include building the political power of the members of Local 25 and growing the Union. The Political Coordinator will assist with contract and political campaigns both internally and externally.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Plan and implements political field campaigns for the Union, which mobilize rank-and-file members to knock doors for Union-endorsed candidates in DC, MD, and VA
- Support the Political Director in planning and executing legislative campaigns on both the local and state level in DC, MD, and VA to support the Union’s members and build power for hospitality workers.
- Build relationships with elected and community allies.
- Assists the Organizing Department with campaigns, events, and gaining support from elected officials and allies.
- Helps plan and execute major union mobilization efforts and events.
- Represents the union at meetings with labor allies, coalition partners, and legislative and elected allies.
- Monitors and analyzes legislative and regulatory proposals that have the potential to impact hotel workers in the D.C. metro region.
- Drafts policy and regulatory proposals that will empower and improve the lives of hotel workers.
- Assists the Research Department in developing and implementing new strategies for growth.
- Assists in the execution and maintenance of the Union’s communications strategy.
Experience and Qualifications
Candidates must have experience in legislative, electoral and/or organizing campaigns. Candidates must demonstrate the ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities simultaneously. Candidates must have experience writing and executing a plan of work, while holding staff and colleagues accountable. A strong preference is given to those with experience working with a diverse team of people. Candidates are strongly preferred to have a background in the labor movement and/or progressive politics. Excellent computer, written and verbal communications skills required. College degree or equivalent professional experience required.
Required minimum qualifications
- Demonstrated commitment to social justice.
- Demonstrate the ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities simultaneously.
- Bachelor degree or equivalent professional experience required.
- Minimum of two year experience in legislative, electoral and/or organizing campaigns with a labor union, state or local agency, non-profit, or progressive candidate or elected official.
- Exceptional analytical and written communication skills.
- The ability to communicate respectfully and comfortably and build relationships with people from diverse backgrounds.
- Strong understanding of politics.
- Resourcefulness and talent for problem-solving.
- High ability to learn new skills and areas of knowledge quickly.
- Strong personal and professional integrity.
- Knowledge of NGP VAN.
- Candidates must maintain a current driver’s license and be willing to work long and irregular hours, including nights and weekends.
Secondary qualifications
- Possession of any of the following qualifications is beneficial but not required:
- Experience in the labor movement.
- Experience running political field campaigns
- Understanding of zoning, urban real estate development, or urban politics.
- Fluency in Spanish.
- Experience working in the hotel, restaurant, hospitality, or other service industries.
The Salary range is $52,000 – $65,000, commensurate with experience.
