Community Organizer

Memphis A. Philip Randolph Institute (APRI) is the Senior Constituency Group of the AFL-CIO. We are a community arm of the AFL-CIO that works to bridge the gap between Labor and the community. Memphis APRI continues the fight for social, political and economic justice for all working Americans. We believe in using our collective voices through registering, educating and mobilizing voters.
Memphis APRI has an opening for a Community Organizer. Successful candidates for this position must be self-motivated, passionate for justice and equity, and a team player. The Organizer will be assigned to Rural West Tennessee Counties with responsibilities in both internal and external development. Fifty percent of duties will be to build the capacity of our coalition partner TN for ALL.
Key Responsibilities:
- Broaden Memphis APRI membership, leadership and capacity building to successfully win campaigns.
- Building relationships with Labor and Community Leaders and members.
- Recruiting and engaging Coalition Partners and Unions.
- Developing self and others through coaching, training and shared experiences.
- Organizing individuals and teams to carry out effective issue work and campaigns.
- Plan and execute direct actions.
- Support fundraising for Memphis APRI.
- Support efforts of our statewide coalition partners that are part of TN for All.
- Work with Unions and CLC on campaigns and organizing.
Required Knowledge and Experience:
- 1-4 years of experience Unions, worker advocacy organizations, direct worker organizing or community organizing
- Well organized with strong abilities in strategy and analysis
- Strong communication skills: oral, written and interpersonal
- Ability to resolve conflict
- Strong computer skills
- VAN or other electoral systems experience a plus
Requirements:
- This is a full time position requiring 40 hours per week
- In person and virtual
- Ability to work flexible hours including evenings and weekends
- Some travel
Location/Compensation:
This position is based in Memphis/Rural West TN. Salary $50,000 annually and includes health insurance benefits.
