Communications Director

Position will be based in one of SEIU Texas’ three offices:
Houston, El Paso, or Corpus Christi, TX

 

SEIU Texas, an affiliate of the 2 million member strong Service Employees International Union, unites more than 6,000 healthcare workers, janitors, security officers and airport workers in Corpus Christi, El Paso, and Houston who have secured better wages, benefits, and working conditions through their union. Airport workers in Houston just won $15/hour and airport workers in Dallas are beginning to organize. We believe this is just the beginning of the explosive growth of workers organizing in Texas.

We seek an experienced, effective and creative communication professional to join our team, support our organizing program and grow the union’s media and online presence. This position will be vital in educating, growing and engaging our audiences, both internal and external, including allies and new and long-term members.

The Communications Director should be an excellent writer and strategist with a clear vision on how to use paid & earned media to amplify working families. The ideal candidate should have 6 plus years experience as a communications professional and have experience leading a team. This position will be part of the local’s senior team leadership and responsible for managing staff .

Responsibilities:
SEIU Texas houses a full-service communications shop, which includes producing written materials, graphics, videos, and social media content that targets a variety of audiences, including inside the union’s membership, the general public, and legislators and other policy makers. While no one Communications Director will have all the technical skills necessary to excel in all of these areas, a successful Communications Director must have significant professional expertise in one of these disciplines, and must be able to communicate a vision of how all the elements of a successful communications strategy work together. This will include the need to supervise both union staff and outside contractors who may come together to produce materials for the union’s use.

The Communications Director will need to be able to:

  • Work with campaign directors to create core messaging and materials, drive engagement of workers and other stakeholders, and build awareness of SEIU Texas organizing;
  • Create communications strategies, budgets, timelines and plans;
  • Track those plans and ensure campaign communications needs an deadlines are met;
  • Create overall messaging and content for campaigns and maintain message & brand consistency;
  • Oversee the daily work of other communications staff, including designers and communications specialists, and sometimes outside vendors;
  • Work with the Communications Team to create literature (worksite flyers, brochures, direct mail), attain earned media coverage by building relationships with journalists, bloggers and influencers; produce paid media, and maintain the union’s online presence.

Required qualifications:

  • 6-8 years of communications work, including at least 2 years working in a supervisory capacity.
  • Ability to think strategically and participate effectively as part of a campaign team.
  • Excellent writing, proofreading, desktop publishing, verbal, visual/ graphic, and communications skills.
  • Experience managing various social media platforms including Facebook, Twitter and TikTok.
  • Ability to work on multiple projects, coordinating work with others to produce projects on time.
  • Ability to work within timelines under pressure and minimal supervision.
  • Respect for language justice.
  • Willingness to work long and irregular hours and attend required evening and weekend activities.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and a reliable car.

“Nice to Have” Qualifications:

  • Experience in writing leaflets, newsletters, and similar communications.
  • Familiarity with all aspects of literature production including programs such as Canva, Adobe InDesign, Adobe Illustrator, and Photoshop.
  • Working knowledge of website maintenance. HTML coding preferred.
  • Spanish proficiency preferred.

Salary & Benefits:

  • Salary Range: $86,000-$92,000
  • SEIU Texas offers competitive benefits package covering 100% of employee medical, dental, & vision insurance premiums, cell phone reimbursement, car and gas reimbursement.

Location: This is a full time position which can be based out of SEIU Texas’ offices in Houston, El Paso or Corpus Christi.

Travel: Under non-pandemic circumstances, domestic travel for this role may be up to 30% of this position. Must be willing to work periodically long, irregular hours, to travel as needed, and engage with members during after-work hours, as that may be when members are available.
