Coordinator of Field and Member Engagement

Position will be based in one of SEIU Texas’ three offices:
Houston, El Paso, or Corpus Christi, TX


SEIU Texas, an affiliate of the 2 million member strong Service Employees International Union, unites more than 6,000 healthcare workers, janitors, security officers and airport workers in Corpus Christi, El Paso, and Houston who have secured better wages, benefits, and working conditions through their union. Airport workers in Houston just won $15/hour and airport workers in Dallas are beginning to organize. We believe this is just the beginning of the explosive growth of workers organizing in Texas.

SEIU TX is looking for a Coordinator of Field & Member Engagement, a position which exercises full managerial authority to lead, direct, coordinate and execute the activities of Houston. This position’s responsibilities include furthering the Local’s member leadership program, supervising field organizers, bargaining contracts and directing organizing efforts.

Responsibilities include:

  • Monitoring and coordinating aspects of legislative and policy reform initiatives that effect the Union, worker’s rights and social justice.
  • Working with the Political Director and local partners on strategic campaigns.
  • Planning and implementing an electoral program for local, state and federal elections.
  • Overseeing and carrying out regional activity for federal legislative campaigns.
  • Planning and coordinating political field activities, lobby visits, phone banking and events for our public policy campaigns at the county, state and federal level;
  • Mobilizing, training and educating new member leaders and activists for legislative and electoral activity.
  • Supporting contract and organizing campaigns, including rallies, press events and targeted owner activity.
  • Coordinating the Union’s work with local labor and community allies.
  • Follows current events and creates timely, appropriate responses if necessary.

Additional requirements:

  • Degree in political science, economics or related field or equivalent work experience
  • Knowledge and understanding of the political structures and key players in Texas at the state, local and county levels.
  • Excellent independent judgment and attention to sensitive situations and relationships.
  • Ability to develop and implement comprehensive political plans
  • Strong knowledge of federal, state, and local campaign finance rules and regulations and lobbying rules.
  • Experience working on electoral campaigns and managing field programs.
  • Experience engaging directly impacted people and moving them to take action.
  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing with elected officials and with community organizations, members and other staff.
  • Ability to work on multiple projects, coordinating work with others to produce projects on time.
  • Ability to work within timelines under pressure and minimal supervision.
  • Willingness to work long and irregular hours and attend required evening and weekend activities.
  • Proof of COVID-19 vaccination

Salary & Benefits:

  • Compensation: $70,000 – $75,000
  • SEIU Texas offers a competitive benefits package covering 100% of employee medical, dental, & vision insurance premiums, and a defined benefit pension plan.

Location: This is a full time position based out of SEIU Texas’ offices in Houston, El Paso or Corpus Christi.
