Union Organizer

The Houston Organization of Public Employees (AFSCME Local 123) is a dynamic labor union representing over 12,000 City of Houston Municipal Employees. We are a member-driven union with rank-and-file leadership dedicated to building a strong organization to fight for equal opportunity, economic growth, education, liberty, and justice for all. HOPE LOCAL 123 is seeking a Union Organizer who must have labor union experience in order to be able to identify, recruit, and develop member leaders.


  • Identify, Recruit, and Develop rank and file member leaders.
  • Present HOPE Member plans and opportunities in worksite meetings and New Employee Orientations.
  • Plan and carry out effective worksite visits and issue based campaigns.
  • Engage, motivate, and mobilize workers to take action.
  • Participate in membership growth activities including but not limited to department drives, house visits, phone banks, and individual conversations.
  • Support HOPE sponsored public actions and community events
  • Prepare leaflets, bulletins, etc. for communication with membership when needed.
  • Work with members to enforce the Collective Bargaining Agreement.
  • Attend regular general membership meetings.

Requirements include:

  • Experience as a Union Representative/Organizer or proven ability to perform the duties of the position.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to both the labor movement, and racial and social justice.
  • Organizing new members to strengthen their workplace.
  • Strong effective listening, written, and verbal skills in a variety of forms, including but not limited to phone calls, emails, letters, presentations, displays, flyers, and petitions.
  • Ability to follow and track a structued conversation including delivering planned responses with high accuracy and consistency.
  • Willingness to familiarize yourself with the Meet and Confer Agreement and relevant municipal policies and procedures.
  • Computer skills and proficiency in basic programs and virtual meeting services.
  • Willingness to work non-traditional, irregular hours including nights and weekends.
  • Willingness to work both independently and as part of a team with people from diverse cultures and backgrounds.
  • Time management skills including arriving at appointments and meetings adequately prepared and on time.
  • Valid driver's license, dependable automobile, and valid automobile insurance.

Salary and Benefits: Salary depending on experience, benefits include fully-paid health, dental, and vision benefits packages, a defined benefit pension, and car and cell phone allowances.
