REPORTS TO: Director of Technology Institute

The AFL-CIO Technology Institute is a new dynamic organization launched in 2021 to inject the voices of working people and unions into the multi-faceted innovation & technology sectors, to reform innovation policy, and to ensure that technology isn’t just a tool to jettison good jobs and deskill workers. Creation of the Institute was a core recommendation of the 2019 AFL-CIO Commission on the Future of Work and Unions, a multi-sector collaborative of union leaders determined to build a powerful strategy to prepare our movement for the onslaught of change in our work.

The Institute is seeking an individual with visibility into the labor movement who can serve as Operations Manager with a focus on organizational management, development of operational approaches that support a growing team and inspire accountability and collaboration, and precision program execution of a national technology and innovation agenda.

This is an exciting opportunity, inside a national startup, to help a growing team shape and execute the Institute’s diverse program streams designed around strategies that influence the future of work and the role of technology in our working lives.

Develop management systems that can support the Institute’s pipeline of initiatives and specifically:

  • Create and maintain a positive work experience for the entire team with use of progressive management strategies that help create a tolerant, inclusive and worker-friendly environment for effective execution of the Institute's work
  • Oversee organization finances including expenditures and budgets, grant compliance and execution, contracts and audits
  • Develop and implement organizational management systems
  • Handle human resource and personnel matters
  • Keep programs and initiatives on-time and on-track and ensure objectives and deadlines are established and met
  • Assist director with organizational interaction with board of directors, AFL-CIO affiliates and staff, funding partners and other key stakeholders
  • Manage relationships with consultants
  • Self-starter, ability to work with teams and solo.
  • Resourceful and creative. Ability to problem solve and offer recommendations and solutions when needed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned


  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience
  • Minimum of 5 years’ management experience in the labor movement or equivalent in the progressive community with labor movement relationships
  • Commitment to strong unions and social & economic justice
  • Demonstrated track record of management experience that compliments the duties and responsibilities of the Institute’s director
  • Ability to exercise excellent political judgment and complete discretion
  • Excellent writing, communication and interpersonal skills
  • Track record of managing a staff
  • Ability to manage high level relationships with union affiliates and outside stakeholders and funders
  • Comfortable working long and extended hours and occasional travel.

Based in Washington DC (headquarters)

Salary: $90,000 – $105,000
