Service Representative – Bilingual English/Spanish preferred

Based in Washington, DC Metropolitan Area
(with regional travel throughout Local 400)

UFCW Local 400 represents 34,000 workers who work mostly in retail and food processing industries throughout the greater Washington DC area, Virginia and West Virginia.

UFCW Local 400 is seeking to hire someone in the following position:

Service Representative – Bilingual English/Spanish preferred
Type of Employment: Full time salaried

Location: Washington, DC Metropolitan Area

However you must be willing to travel to all areas covered by Local 400, including the entire states of Virginia and West Virginia and parts of Maryland, Tennessee, Ohio, and Kentucky.

Major responsibilities include:

  • Maintaining visibility in assigned worksites on all shifts and in all departments
  • Maintaining high levels of membership sign up
  • Developing membership as an activist base
  • Recruiting and developing shop stewards as leaders
  • Understanding and working to resolve member issues
  • Handling issues and grievances, including investigations
  • Actively enforcing the contract and legal rights of members
  • Responding to member inquiries in a timely way until the issue is resolved
  • Taking part in organizing drives and political and legislative campaigns
  • Special assignments that require time spent in other departments or areas inside or outside the union’s geographical area


  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Knowledge or experience in the labor movement
  • Ability to work independently
  • Ability to organize and plan work
  • Commitment to fight for justice and human rights
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Bilingual English/Spanish (and/or other languages) important
  • Willingness to work long, irregular hours
  • Valid driver's license
  • Reliable vehicle
