FIELD ORGANIZING SPECIALIST

JOB SUMMARY:
The purpose of the position is to develop, plan and implement a variety of programs which grow and maintain membership; develop and support affiliate leaders; and build and maintain strong, effective affiliate organizations. Individuals holding this position report directly to the UniServ Regional Director of the zone in which they are assigned. They will lead and coordinate local, county, state and national initiatives with all affiliates assigned to their regional office as well as coordinate with Field Organizing Specialists in other zones. They will assist assigned locals in creating and maintaining structures in each worksite that leads to ongoing and regular member-to-member conversations. Working in a team with other staff and local leaders, the Field Organizing Specialist will lead and engage stakeholders with strategies to build and maintain structures to ensure that member engagement, recruitment and retention goals are achieved.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Develop and implement membership, leadership, and organizing programs;
  • Provide leadership and assistance during crisis situations and statewide campaigns, as needed;
  • Use a variety of social media forums to connect with and organize members and the public;
  • Use a variety of technology resources to identify, engage and activate members to participate in the functions of their union;
  • Utilizes the Voter Activation Network (VAN) and other data tools, to coordinate organizing efforts;
  • Develop, review, and update training modules to support the implementation of programs;
  • Inform and train NJEA staff, leaders and members on issues under the purview of the position;
  • Proven ability to conduct effective one on one conversation with members and stakeholders;
  • Develop and implement strategies to identify and analyze potential and new member issues to support a broad range of program areas;
  • Train and/or assign NJEA part-time consultants, as appropriate;
  • Partner with staff from other divisions, to support NJEA’s priorities, including political and legislative activities.;
  • Develop, review, and update programs designed to organize, maintain, and generate membership growth;
  • Represent and promote NJEA-NEA among New Jersey school employees;
  • Perform such other duties as may be assigned by the UniServ regional director.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A bachelor’s degree is preferred.
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint software and the development of Power Point presentations, or equivalent.
  • Proficient in virtual meeting tools including hosting Zoom meetings.
  • Highly skilled in the use of a variety of social media forums.
  • Highly skilled in the use of the Voter Activation Network (VAN) and other data tools.
  • Highly skilled in the use of communication technology to connect with and organize, e.g., Hustle, Action Network and Thunderclap.
  • Highly skilled in collecting and organizing data.
  • Knowledge of organizing strategies and significant experience organizing to promote membership and organizational engagement.
  • Demonstrated consistent leadership experience in successful organizing campaigns.
  • Ability to motivate and inspire members to plan and carry out goals and timetables, to establish, maintain and enhance successful working relationships.
  • Experience in identifying and analyzing issues of importance to union members.
  • Self-motivated organizing experience with attention to detail, responsible follow-through, with a high degree of, integrity, creativity, and imagination
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to transfer complex ideas into simple, direct language.
  • Commitment to and knowledge of NJEA’s vision, mission and goals.
  • Must be able to work long hours, drive to locations throughout New Jersey, and occasionally travel out-of-state, as needed.
  • Physical stamina to withstand extraordinary demands of crises and issue organizing.
  • Highly skilled in working cooperatively with others.

SALARY:
As per negotiated agreement. Liberal vacation, retirement, health insurance, life insurance, and other fringe benefits.
