Politics and Policy Director

Based in Austin, TX


The Texas AFL-CIO is a statewide labor federation with 240,000 members that serves as the leading voice for working families in Texas. We are looking for a Director of Politics and Policy to lead and coordinate our effort to make sure that the voices of working Texans are heard loud and clear in Texas politics and in the legislative process. The ideal candidate will share our vision on the critical role of the labor movement in the struggle to change Texas and have substantial experience leading large programs in the labor movement.

The Director of Politics and Policy will be responsible for working with State Federation leaders, staff, and affiliates to develop, lead and coordinate strategic initiatives to build power for working people in Texas.

Job Duties

  • Organize affiliates and affiliate resources around a coordinated, strategic political program;
  • Draft and execute campaign plans that reflect organizational and affiliate priorities and interests, and which are able to draw and justify investment of resources from affiliates and allied organizations;
  • Oversee implementation and execution of campaign plans;
  • Lead the development of coherent, legislative agenda based on priorities or the Texas AFL-CIO and affiliates;
  • Oversee and coordinate legislative/lobbying efforts of staff and affiliates;
  • Connect legislative priorities to political priorities, and vice versa;
  • Connect legislative and political programs to ongoing mobilization, leadership development, racial justice and climate jobs initiatives;
  • Supervise and coordinate legislative, political and mobilization staff, as well as communications staff as appropriate, to form one coherent operation;
  • Represent the Texas AFL-CIO with key allies at various tables and in coalition spaces;

Position Requirements

  • Share vision of building a bigger, broader and bolder labor movement;
  • Substantial experience leading and/or overseeing political operations in a labor movement context;
  • Substantial experience leading and/or overseeing legislative programs, preferably in Texas.
  • Strong independent judgement and ability to develop trusted relationships with affiliates, allies, candidates and office holders;
  • Ability to effectively supervise, communicate with, and develop staff;
  • Excellent time-management and organizational skills;
  • Ability to work collaboratively and create a positive work environment and culture;
  • Excellent communication skills.

The salary for this position is very competitive and carries a generous benefit package including health care and pension. Applications will be considered on a rolling basis, but the intent is to move as quickly as practicable to fill the position.
