Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
The Communications Director leads JMA’s internal and external communications strategies, ensuring that all JMA team members speak in one voice. They make this happen by training employees on JMA branding and messaging, co-developing communications strategies with staff in our regional offices and on the national level. The director also explores new media tools, building external relationships to win equity-based good jobs, climate justice and accountability policies. They think deeply about how to communicate our message effectively while advancing our vision of public goods for the most public good.

Within 6 months

  • Lead the development of an annual communications work plan and strategy that aligns with JMA’s 5-year strategic plan
  • Develop and manage a staff team and consultants from diverse backgrounds and disciplines, holding them accountable to achieving programmatic goals and providing opportunities for professional development
  • Lead in the development and management of comprehensive communications strategies to support programmatic campaigns that integrate research, organizing, legal and policy strategies
  • Ensure compliance with all organizational policies and procedures – both timely attention to individual administrative responsibilities as well as oversight to ensure the understanding and compliance of team members
  • Lead in implementing policies and procedures to support the work and development of team members, including developing and managing team budget and conducting timely performance evaluations and discussion of benchmarks
  • Contribute to JMA’s organizational development, for example assisting with fundraising, providing peer evaluations, facilitating internal trainings and participating in JMA staff committees (not to exceed 20% of time)

After 1 year

  • Ensure all JMA external messages reflect strategic plan priorities related to reframing the narrative about public goods and infrastructure spending
  • Identify opportunities to incorporate JMA narrative into breaking news and current federal and local policies
  • Demonstrates strategic planning skills: Able to develop and effectively implement a strategic plan that results in successful campaigns/projects; Able to involve the team in developing and implementing the plan; and, Ensures overall plan is represented in weekly plans
  • Support the development of media trainings and develop spokespeople for JMA
  • Build substantial relationships and engage high level stakeholders in supporting our communications work, including public officials, unions, coalition partners, journalists and funders
  • As a member of the management team, contribute to strategic planning, cross-team collaboration and the development of organization wide policies and systems
  • Demonstrates commitment to develop skills and improve ability to fundraise effectively, including inspiring funders with a vision for the campaign/project and meeting personal fundraising goals


  • Deep understanding of political landscape and dynamics within the city, state and community and coalition spaces
  • Significant knowledge of the labor movement in the U.S. and basic understanding of local union needs and concerns
  • Understanding of JMA’s strategic plan and the work of other teams and ability to initiate cross team collaboration as needed to strengthen the overall ability of JMA to achieve our strategic goals
  • Facilitation skills and an ability to unite the team on overall goals, strategic direction and campaign/work plans

Work Experience Requirements:

  • Experience leading strategic communications in relevant fields: Experience working on policy, legislative, labor and/or issue-based campaigns
  • Good strategic thinking: ability to power map, plan, and execute communications campaigns to win policy victories and community benefits agreements
  • Strong Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to tailor message to clearly and persuasively communicate JMA’s work to the public and inspire people to support our work
  • Builds Relationships with media and communicators at partner organizations: Ability to identify journalists’ interests and build long-lasting relationships.
  • Interpersonal skills: Ability to build relationships and engage effectively with a talented, opinionated, and diverse group of team members, as well as external stakeholders. Communicate clearly and compassionately and are flexible and collaborative in your work. You demonstrate self-awareness about how your identities may influence how you show up, interact with, and are perceived by others
  • Management insight: Ability to manage a diverse, high-performing team and bring an understanding of what it takes to produce results using an antiracist and intersectional approach.
  • Critical thinking: Quickly grasp the subtleties of issues and come up with insightful and pragmatic ways to address them. Able to identify issues and address them quickly and effectively
  • Flexibility: Be ready to take advantage of unexpected opportunities; adapt quickly as things change


  • Demonstrated commitment to advancing the interests of people of color, women, and/or formerly incarcerated people at America’s workplaces.
  • Ability to build and sustain authentic and productive working relationships with colleagues across race and other group identities, including JMA employees as well as external partners
  • Ability to continually assess and thoughtfully develop the leadership of team members through regular 1:1s, setting of annual SMARTIE goals (strategic, measurable, ambitious, realistic, time-bound, inclusive and equitable) and benchmarks and annual performance evaluations

  • Familiarity with GoogleSuite

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to safely and successfully perform the essential job functions consistent with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards, including meeting qualitative and/or quantitative productivity standards.

Compensation for this role is $85,500-$105,000 depending on experience and location. Benefits include annual raises, full health and dental benefits at no premium cost to the employee, Flexible Spending Account, cell phone and transit pass reimbursement, generous time off, including 12 personal days off a year, 12 paid vacation days, 12 sick days, 12 paid holidays, paid family leave and eligibility to apply for a paid sabbatical after 5 years. JMA also provides a 401(k) plan with 5% employer contribution after 6 months of employment and professional development opportunities.
