Organizer

Based in Northern California

 

The International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) has a new position opening up in our Northern California region for Organizer. The ILWU has a long and proud tradition of building and supporting bottom – up worker power and workplace democracy. An ILWU Organizer is responsible for the implementation of the Union's program for organizing new members. The Organizer is also responsible for assisting affiliates with internal organizing. The Organizer may be assigned to other areas on the West Coast as the need arises.

The Organizer reports to and works under the direction of the Director of Organizing. On a frequent and routine basis, the Organizer will draft campaign plans, budget requests and reports to the Director of Organizing as to their activities, organizing needs of their assigned area, and other related matters.

Principal Duties Include:

  • Provides leadership and strategy for all organizing campaigns in their assigned area, including direct worker organization, community outreach and public relations campaigns;
  • Coordinates and implements organizing programs and campaigns with bargaining, contract enforcement and other programs of the National Organizing Committee (NOC);
  • Develops and works with organizing committees and member organizers, as well as local leadership;
  • Works with a strategic researcher dedicated to supporting organizing, including identifying research needs and evaluating research results;
  • Works with a communications specialist to support the work of the Department;
  • Represents the union before the National Labor Relations Board, community, labor and political coalitions, and other public areas.

Qualifications:
The Organizer requires a high level of judgment, leadership and commitment to the goals of the Union and its leaders. They must be able to work independently in a complex political situation while being timely, accountable and outgoing. The Organizer should have a history of being a part of or leading political, community or union organizing campaigns.

Ideal, but not required skills:

  • Have led or been a part of a union organizing campaign in the private and public sector;
  • Familiar with logistic, hospitality and public sector worker units;
  • Familiar with regional community activism including social, racial, and economic justice;
  • At least a Bachelor’s Degree;
  • Fluent in Spanish is a plus;
  • Comfortable with Googledocs, spreadsheets, PowerPoints and social media such as, Instagram, Twitter, TikTok, Facebook, etc. As well as using communication platforms such as Signal, WhatsApp, Zoom, etc.

Compensation:
Pay and benefits are generous and depend on experience ranging from the low $60k through the low $90k as defined by the collective bargaining agreement with the Pacific Media Workers Guild, CWA Local 39521. Fully paid healthcare, 401k, and pension after vesting are included. There is also a car and cellphone allowance. The Organizer must have a working – insured car and California Driver’s License upon the date of their offer letter. There will be no relocation allowances.
