Full-Time Union Organizer

Graduate Employees’ Organizing Committee (GEOC), AFT Michigan Local #6123, is seeking a Full-Time Union Organizer who will focus primarily on organizing members and enforcing the negotiated contract. This is a one-year temporary position with the possibility of renewal. GEOC represents approximately 500 graduate teaching/student assistants at Wayne State University. The GEOC Organizer reports to the union’s elected, volunteer executive board. The position is represented by the Newspaper Guild of Detroit CWA Local 34055.

Candidates should have strong one-on-one organizing skills, experience working with diverse populations, and be committed to fostering a participatory and progressive labor movement. Candidates must be able to work a flexible schedule, as some nights and weekends may be necessary.

Salary is approximately $43,000/year or $21.00/hour. Competitive health and dental insurance are provided as well as a 401k plan with a 3% employer contribution. The position will be based in Detroit, Michigan, but may require occasional in-state travel. We will begin reviewing applications on June 14. The posting for this position will close on June 25.

Job Duties:

  • Recruit new GEOC members
  • Create an organizing committee of graduate workers
  • Increase GEOC involvement by activating new members through office visits, departmental events, membership meetings, work actions, campaigns, etc.
  • Organize and mobilize workers in higher education
  • Attend meetings with team members, supervisors to discuss progress and plan activities
  • One-on-one visits, site visits, in-person meetings, phone calls, video meetings, and other interaction with members and potential members
  • Data entry on a daily and weekly basis

Qualifications:

  • Strong one-on-one organizing skills
  • Ability to work independently, facilitate group interactions, and mentor others
  • Ability to engage and support a diverse membership with different identities including but not limited to race, gender, class, sexuality, ability, and nationality, as well as varying political orientation, awareness, and experience
  • Manage time and coordinate multiple projects in a fast-paced environment
  • Demonstrated ability to envision and realize long-term goals
  • Willing to work long and irregular hours
  • Dedicated to social and economic justice, and public education
  • Experience working with word processing software, spreadsheets, databases, and social media platforms
  • Experienced with social media platforms and campaign messaging
  • Ability to relate to and work with diverse groups of people, as well as an understanding of the daily challenges faced by workers employed in higher education

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Labor or community organizing experience, especially in higher education.
  • Experience organizing job actions and contract campaigns.
  • Experience as a staff member in a volunteer-run organization.
  • Familiarity with grievance processes and contract language.
  • Familiarity or background working with graduate students and/or higher ed workers.
