Position Summary:
SEIU Virginia 512 is looking for motivated, organized, and dedicated individuals with prior database and organizing experience to build power for workers by maintaining and enhancing an effective membership database system. The Database Organizer will work with the Database Administrator, Secretary-Treasurer, and Organizers to effectively track and share data throughout the union, enable organizers to grow membership and develop leaders, and win a true voice on the job for workers.

Job Responsibilities:
The responsibilities of the Database Organizer include, but are not limited to:

  1. Database Maintenance and Enhancement work
    • Maintain a data system that effectively tracks members’ contact and dues information;
    • Update contact info (phone numbers, addresses, work-sites) and notes from organizers;
    • Maintain accurate membership rolls by inputting new members and tracking people who drop their membership;
    • Work with members and staff to follow up with new members and dropped members;
    • Work with data department at SEIU HQ in DC to stay abreast of new ways to collect and track data. Preform all functions of a database to include working with several systems and industry to provide the best data;
    • Work with Secretary-Treasurer and financial agent to ensure accurate processing of monthly membership applications and dues. Verify collection of dues, keeping track of issues with members;
    • Create house-visit packets and additional information in an appropriate time during organizing drives;
    • Produce weekly and monthly numbers reports showing membership growth and drops, activism, dues, and more;
    • Work with Organizing Director to develop and help lead database/data trainings for staff and members;
    • Use data to assist with political advocacy work: Assist Organizers with understanding ways to connect chapters on work, community, and geographical issues;
    • Strong knowledge of excel, with the ability to create, maintain, and merge lists.
  2. Data Technology and Innovation
    • Help drive the effort to develop innovative and effective new means of tracking and sharing data in order to build power for working people;
    • Work with SEIU to create efficient systems to upload, update and share data;
    • Research and assist with implementing more efficient systems for conference calls and non-face to face communication;
    • Maintain the security of all data and ensure staff and members are using best practices when collecting and sharing information;
    • Uses spreadsheets or databases to organize information and produce standard reports.
    • Knowledge of, or ability to research multiple software packages to prepare equations, statistics, tables and/or presentations;
    • Ability to process and integrate complex data.
  3. Administrative Duties
    • Assist with maintaining an efficient and productive office space by answering phones, taking messages and greeting members who come to the office.
    • Verify membership as requests of assistances are made.
    • Responds to inquiries that require referencing a variety of sources and utilizing knowledge of the union/local/member services. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with both external and internal contacts.

Strong candidates will possess the following qualifications:

  • Background in union organizing, progressive politics and/or political campaigns with experience in field and data;
  • Ability to work with staff and members of diverse backgrounds in both one-on-one and in group settings;
  • Motivated self-starters with a commitment to building strong unions;
  • Solid judgment in interacting and communicating with workers, the public, political and community leaders;
  • Willingness and ability to function well within a team structure;
  • Willingness to learn new skills;
  • Strong computer, database and technology skills;
  • Sufficient written and verbal communications skills;
  • Ability to work irregular hours, including nights and weekends;
  • Valid state driver’s license and have a car;
  • Kindness, empathy and concern for others.

Salary and Benefits:
Starting salary range is $49,000 to $52,000 annually, with annual cost-of-living-adjustments and merit raises. Benefits package includes: defined-benefit pension, fully-paid health insurance, generous paid leave, etc. In addition, an auto allowance of over $500/month will be provided. Position is an overtime exempt salaried position
