Organization Overview:
SEIU Michigan joins together Michigan’s 4 SEIU locals—SEIU Healthcare Michigan, SEIU Local 517M, SEIU Local 1 and the Michigan Corrections Organization together to develop and lead the union’s strategy and program across locals, industries, and geographies to build power and win justice for workers, our families, and our communities. SEIU Michigan members are from every walk of life, every political party, every background, every faith. They work across the healthcare spectrum providing high quality care and services. They are the workers who keep our nation’s airports running and make sure landmark buildings are clean and secure. They provide essential public services and give a foundation of learning to our youngest and brightest. SEIU Michigan members believe in and are fighting for a Just Society where all workers are valued, and all people respected—no matter where they come from or what color they are; where all families and communities can thrive; and where we leave a better and more equitable world for generations to come.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Build year round, cycle to cycle power by facilitating and unleashing the power of workers in Michigan.
  • Lead a significant part of SEIU Michigan’s work in fully integrating politics, organizing, and member engagement.
  • Integrate, align, and develop campaigns and campaign strategy (electoral, contract, organizing, etc.);
  • Lead and manage Democracy Leadership Academy—a training and leadership development convening of member leaders.
  • Utilizing Race Class Narrative and other tools to build campaign plans.
  • Conduct trainings and workshops to develop member leaders and staff (in conjunction with Political Directors, other staff from the Locals and International Union).
  • Develop, led, and manage coordinated electoral work on behalf of SEIU Michigan and with each local.
  • Be a significant partner to locals, supervising campaigns of SEIU Michigan while driving overall strategy, campaign coordination, building member leadership, and strengthening relationships among locals.

Education and Experience:

  • Passion for and commitment to working people, organized labor, and racial justice
  • 3-5 years professional experience in organizing, popular education, and/or electoral work.
  • Significant relationships in and understanding of the Michigan progressive and labor community, statewide.
  • Experience managing and working with teams of peers and leaders.
  • Commitment to facilitating workers in building and unleashing their own power.
  • Possessing effective oral and written communications.
  • Developing strong working relationships and the ability to work on a team;
  • Managing and accessing multiple high-priority programs and priorities in different.
  • Managing a program budget and implementing strategic plans.
  • Managing and developing electoral and grassroots campaign plans, logistics.
  • Meeting deadlines with minimal supervision.
  • Working with leaders, staff, and partners and operating with a high level of judgment and discretion.

Working Conditions:
Staff are expected to work long and irregular hours, work on weekends and holidays when necessary.
