Community/Political Affairs Representative

Based in San Diego, CA


This position is responsible for developing, managing and conducting assigned member-involved activities/campaigns that promote and advance the Union’s mission.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES (include but are not limited):

  • Coordinates and organizes the Union’s Affiliate leaders, activists and members to engage/participate in activities that promote and advance the Union’s mission; provides support to Staff Representatives and the Union’s Affiliates in carrying out member participatory activities.
  • Interacts and works with Staff Representatives to help build the Union’s internal/external mobilization capacity; tracks MOVs, activists, members and Affiliate officers who have been trained and participated in internal/external mobilization.
  • Conceptualizes, develops and conducts workshops for Affiliate leaders, activists and Union members on selected membership engagement campaign issues and topics.
  • Represents the Union and its Affiliates in community and political activities.
  • Develops and coordinates community activities and events that highlight the Union’s social justice mission. Working with Staff Representatives, recruits Affiliate members to participate in community activities.
  • Works with Union’s Employers where possible to leverage existing Employer community benefit programs.
  • Conceptualizes, develops and conducts workshops for Affiliate leadership, activists and Union members on how to become politically involved and active in their communities.
  • Coordinates Union membership drives for the PEOPLE PAC, with specific goals for each Affiliate.
  • Represents the Union and its Affiliates at Central Labor Councils; recruits Affiliate members to attend and participate in CLC activities.
  • Conceptualizes, develops and conducts workshops for Affiliate leadership and Union members on how to perform various assignments related to a political campaign, as required. Work may include targeting precincts, developing campaign strategy, writing/producing/distributing voter information material, establishing phone banks, seeking media coverage, organizing get-out-the vote efforts, recruiting volunteers, and working with other unions and coalitions of organizations.


  • B.A. or B.S., in a relevant field.
  • Three or more years of experience working in the labor movement or other progressive movement.
  • Ability to develop, organize and manage grassroots programs and operations.
  • Ability to develop training curriculum and conduct workshops.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both orally and writing into large group settings.
  • Ability to work well independently, manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, ability to communicate and interact effectively with Affiliate leadership and Union members.
  • Salaried position; may require nonstandard work hours and/or weekend and holiday work.
  • Extensive travel may be required, current California Driver’s License.
