Position Summary:
The Member Services Director will lead a growing team of staff and rank-and-file union members, working to represent and empower frontline workers on the job. The Member Services Director will oversee the Member Service program, represent workers in grievances and other cases, design trainings and workshops and otherwise empower union members to defend their rights on the job. The Member Services Director will work with the executive board and with field, policy, political and communications staff across the local union to build a powerful culture of workers’ rights.

Job Responsibilities include:

  • Oversee the local’s Member Services program.
  • Manage Member Services Advocate staff position.
  • Oversee the hiring and supervision of additional Advocate staff positions.
  • Perform intake interviews with members with grievances and other issues on the phone and in person, and train staff and members to perform the same.
  • Evaluate members’ issues and develop strategies to resolve issues.
  • Track and report member issues, data and outcomes, to assess trends and improve effectiveness of Member Services program.
  • Engage and work with local government management and human resources staff to resolve member issues (Public Service workers).
  • Engage and work with Medicaid agency and health care provider staff to resolve member issues (Home Care workers).
  • Direct and assist with grievance preparation, workers compensation assistance, unemployment assistance, and other member needs.
  • Grievance Representation on behalf of members as needed.
  • Assist Members with needs as they arise, including accessing all the resources of the local union.
  • Develop and run trainings and workshops based on the needs of members.
  • Work with executive board to build a culture of workers’ rights and empowerment across the local union.
  • Work with political, policy and field staff to win improvements for workers in local, state and federal policies, legislation and budgets.
  • Work with communications staff to effectively communicate with members, policy-makers, media and others.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
Candidates should have strong commitment to working people and justice; excellent personal, verbal and written communication skills. Candidates should also thrive in a fast-paced and constantly changing environment.

Successful candidates will bring the following skills and attributes to the position:

  • 5+ years’ experience working on labor policies, laws and/or regulations.
  • Ability to work in highly stressful situations in which members may be in fear of losing their jobs or other benefits.
  • Sensitivity to the needs of others.
  • Ability to relate, establish and cultivate respectful relationships with people from diverse backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply labor law and employment policies, practices and procedures.
  • Solid judgment in interacting and communicating with workers, the public, management, and union staff.
  • Ability to work independently and function well within a team structure.
  • Ability to create and maintain excel spreadsheets, googledocs, etc. to track work.
  • Skilled at meeting deadlines in a fast-paced campaign environment;
  • Kindness, empathy and concern for others.

Requirements include:

  • Valid U.S. driver’s license with a good driving record;
  • Ability and willingness to work long, irregular hours, including evenings and weekends;
  • Ability and willingness to travel within Virginia;
  • Relocation to the Northern Virginia area is required if offered a position.

Salary and Benefits:
Starting salary range is $80,000 – 85,000 annually, based on experience, with annual cost-of-living-adjustments and merit raises. Benefits package includes: defined-benefit pension, fully-paid health insurance, generous paid leave, etc. In addition, an auto allowance of over $500/month will be provided. Position is an overtime exempt salaried position
