Lead Strategic Organizer

The Writers Guild of America, East (WGAE) is a labor union representing professional writers of television shows, movies, digital, TV and radio news programs and documentaries, and content for new media platforms. We keep the public informed and entertained!

The WGAE Lead Strategic Organizer is responsible for leading all stages of organizing workers to build collective power: Work with WGAE members and potential members to organize around workplace, media and entertainment industry issues including, but not limited to, contract negotiations/campaigns, industry wide union initiatives, trainings, greater equity and inclusion initiatives, lobbying efforts, member engagement and leadership development, and new organizing campaigns.

Duties may vary by campaign or industry, and may include but are not limited to the following:

Work Responsibilities:

  • Extensive interaction with current membership and others to develop organizing committees and leads
  • Develop and execute work plan that reflects campaign objectives
  • Utilize information from and about workers, employers, economic/financial research on target or industry
  • Win Union Elections and Leverage campaigns
  • Win Contract Campaigns
  • Leading other members staff
  • Coordinating with existing workplace leaders on organizing plans.
  • Identifying and developing new workplace leaders to participate in organizing efforts.
  • Conduct job site/group meetings with members and potential members to discuss ongoing organizing efforts.
  • Communicate with members and potential members outside the workplace through meetings and phone calls.
  • Coordinate with members and potential members to gather information that is useful in identifying opportunities for membership growth and mobilization.
  • Ensure consistent communication with members through regular emails, phone calls, one-on-one and small group meetings, along with turn out for larger membership meetings.
  • Recruit, train and develop leaders, activists and committee members to become more involved in their union. .
  • Regularly use a variety of computer based research tools and relevant office software required for conducting union business.
  • Ability to work independently under tight deadlines and in a team environment;
  • Work long and irregular hours to meet campaign demands
  • Additional tasks and job duties may be assigned at the discretion of management to assist with servicing and organizing all WGAE members and potential members

This position is covered by a staff union contract with the USW.
