As the Development Director, you will be responsible for the overall strategic direction, leadership, and management of fundraising designed to ensure JMA has the necessary resources to carry out its strategic plan priorities and achieve long-term sustainability.

The Development Director reports to the Executive Director and is part of the management team.

Primary Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Develop and execute an annual fund development plan that aligns with JMA’s strategic priorities.
  • Identify, cultivate and maintain strong relationships with funders and donors.
  • Oversee the development and writing of foundation LOIs, concept papers, proposals and reporting.
  • Build and implement strategies to diversify JMA’s revenue sources including the development of major donor programs.
  • Foster an organizational culture of fundraising where everyone -- staff and board -- builds their capacity and has shared accountability to achieve JMA’s fundraising goals.
  • Design, implement and maintain adequate systems and processes to strengthen JMA’s fundraising infrastructure and effectively carry out fund development work.
  • Assure sound fiscal operation of the development department including timely, accurate and comprehensive development of program budgets for grant proposals and grant expenditure reports.
  • Together with Executive Director, Deputy Director and Finance Director, co-create and support the annual organizational budget development and management process.
  • Strengthen JMA’s fundraising capacity through the recruitment, training, supervision and regular evaluation of development staff. Invest in the team through coaching and providing adequate development opportunities.
  • As part of the management team, engage in strategic decision-making, short/long-term strategic planning and development and implementation of organizational strategies, policies and practices.

Required Qualifications
The ideal Development Director candidate excels in relationship-building, has solid writing and verbal communication skills, and has strong project management skills. You should have most of the following qualifications:

  • Minimum of 5 years of nonprofit fundraising experience
  • At least 2 years of supervisory experience
  • Demonstrated commitment to fighting for social, racial, climate and economic justice and possesses a deep understanding of the intersectionality of these struggles.
  • Demonstrated results in securing funding from individuals and/or foundations
  • Demonstrated ability to develop, foster and sustain relationships with funders and individual donors.
  • Ability to passionately and effectively communicate with funders and the public about our work and issues.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong research skills
  • Ability to effectively manage a large workload with competing priorities and deadlines and produce high-quality, polished work in a flexible, high stress, fast-paced environment
  • Exceptional organizational and planning skills with strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to translate big-picture strategy into implementable systems and processes
  • Strong work ethic with the ability to work independently, take initiative, and manage up.
  • Application of Equity & Inclusion Lens: Bring deep insight and a practical lens to places where identity, equity, and power intersect with the work. Recognizes the ways that their own and others’ identities show up and play out in the work, especially as a manager.
  • Able to work well in a collaborative work environment and in an all-remote environment across multiple time zones.
  • Ability to occasionally travel and perform occasional weekend and evening work.

Preferred But Not Required Qualifications:

  • Budget and finance management skills
  • Development and mastery of SMARTIE goals

Compensation for this role is $72,000–$83,000 per year DOE and location (staff who work in Los Angeles and New York will qualify for a higher starting salary.) Benefits include fully paid employee and family health/dental insurance, generous time off including paid family leave and eligibility to apply for a paid sabbatical after 5 years, 401(k) plan with 5% employer contribution after 6 months of employment and professional development opportunities.
