Job responsibilities and essential functions

  • Respect diversity, equity and full inclusion in employment and governance within WEA.
  • Demonstrate commitment to public education, labor, and related progressive causes.
  • Develop and implement strategic media relations program to advance WEA priorities.
  • Serve as association spokesperson and media relations lead - in person and through social media.
  • Coach and train WEA leaders and members for media interviews and related activities.
  • Maintain positive working relationships with journalists, editorial boards, digital publishers; maintain media contact lists.
  • Assist in the development of public and member polls and other market research to ensure WEA members’ beliefs, values, and opinions are represented in strategic communications.
  • Provide strategic communications support for WEA’s electoral, political and legislative priorities and programs - including creating and implementing communications plans, developing messages, writing testimony, drafting print and digital materials, writing a weekly bill update during legislative session; coordinate with vendors for advertising and other services; work closely with colleagues on government relations and public policy teams.
  • Support strategic, multi-channel communications and marketing campaigns related to pro-union, pro-education issues.
  • Prepare accurate written communications for web, email, and social media - often on deadline in a fast-paced environment.
  • Provide communications support to staff colleagues, union members and leaders regarding a range of additional union activities including member organizing, membership retention, and bargaining and strike support.
  • Take photos; produce and edit videos.
  • Partner with labor and other allies on shared projects, goals and messaging.
  • Use project management skills necessary to manage tasks from scoping and development through implementation.
  • Work effectively as a team with other staff in carrying out the assigned responsibilities.
  • Possess the ability to work in a self-directed and efficient manner, maintaining calm under pressure.
  • Demonstrate commitment to the societal, civic, and cultural importance of public education.
  • As a member of the Communications team, be able to support, as needed, department priorities, including member communications, local education associations’ bargains and emerging issues.
  • Support for and commitment to WEA’s organizational objectives, including:
  • Increasing WEA members’ and employees’ professional status and job satisfaction.
  • Improving the quality of and access to public education for all students.
  • Forging partnerships with parents, business, other unions, and community groups.
  • Promoting a just and inclusive society with respect for the worth, dignity, and equality of every individual.
  • Ending institutionalized racism and bias in the union and in public education.
  • Increasing the participation of individuals from historically underrepresented groups in all aspects of WEA activities.
  • Complete other duties as assigned.

Desired qualifications

  • Excellent written and verbal expository and persuasive communications skills.
  • Working knowledge of AP style guidelines.
  • Employing market research to develop communication strategies appropriate to audiences and association goals.
  • Training other team members and stakeholders in media relations, messaging, strategic communications.
  • Developing and implementing long-term strategic communications plans and goals in support of organizational goals.
  • Fluency in a language in addition to English.

Minimum job requirements

  • A bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Communications, Public Relations, or a closely related field, or four to six years of directly relevant work experience.
  • Minimum of three (3) to five (5) years’ experience working as a spokesperson for an education or labor organization, or related progressive cause.
  • Knowledge and experience in strategic communications planning.
  • Experience working on electoral campaigns and/or legislative communications.
  • Proven track record of successfully training others in media relations and communication strategies and tactics.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and proficiency with digital communications tools, including media distribution lists and platforms, customer relations management systems for email and advocacy uses, text services, social media tools and their back-end functionality.
  • Proficiency in Office 365, digital and desktop publishing programs, audio and video editing software.
  • Ability to travel both in and outside the State of Washington.
  • Ability to obtain a valid Washington State driver's license, have a satisfactory driving record and a dependable automobile for Association travel; proof of automobile insurance with liability limits of at least $100,000/$300,000 required.
  • Willingness to take temporary assignments in other state locations as required by the work.

Salary and Benefits

Salary: $106,120 to $151,368/yr.
