Organizer

Based in New Brunswick and Newark, NJ

 

About Us: New Labor is an organization of mostly low wage immigrant workers that educates, organizes and fights for better conditions of work. We are a membership based organization with centers in New Brunswick, Newark and Lakewood. Our goal is to make progressive change at the local and state levels through member driven trainings, actions and campaigns.

Salary: 42K + health Benefits + Union Contract
Hours: 40/week (though usually more as a salaried position, 44 . week m-th)

Requirements:

  • Bilingual in English and Spanish
  • 2+ professional organizing experiences
  • Adequate writing skill, specifically specialization in press release, media advisory work

This person would be tasked with organizing restaurant, food service, and hospitality workers, with specific emphasis on integrating communities that have not historically been a part of the New Labor base – including younger workers (teens-early 20s), black workers, workers from other immigrant communities, student workers, etc.

This person will specifically work to engage the New Labor members who are workers who find themselves working in the back of the house alongside the base we/ are trying to newly activate, the community that traditionally finds itself in the front.

Work Responsibilities Will Include:

  • Conducting cold outreach to food service workers, through a mix of home visits, on the job visits, and visits to social/community spaces populated by these workers (student center study areas, laundromats, bars that have been ID'd as the “hang-out spot” after a shift, etc.)
  • Offer support at the Newark once a week, with specific emphasis on out of the office outreach - passing out fliers, conducting cold outreach similar to what is described above
  • Get trained in processing wage theft forms as well as the process for submitting other forms of job complaints -through OSHA, EEOC
  • Host weekly wage theft clinic and support New Labor members selected to help conduct the clinic with them,
  • Host monthly “Consejo” spaces for restaurant workers -- create ice breaker questions and develop curriculum with staff to encourage conversation about the issues that divide us: privilege, race, gender, language
  • Conduct class raps and club raps on the Rutgers University campus about wage theft and intern opportunities
  • Develop a rubric for IDing restaurant worker organizers/leaders
  • Using organizer rubric, ID potential salts for specific workplace campaigns. Those salts would be identified through the wage theft clinics, consejos, other NL events, etc.
  • Help facilitate specific workplace campaigns by holding meetings, plotting campaign timelines with staff
