Founded by a private practice physician in 1972, over the last forty years the Union of American Physicians and Dentists has grown into the largest union representing licensed doctors and providers in the United States. Affiliated with AFSCME and the AFL-CIO, UAPD is proud to bring the strength of the labor movement to the aid of working doctors and providers in the interest of better healthcare for all. The majority of work will be in the Duluth area with some periods of extended travel possible.


  • Build a supermajority union support through one on one organizing conversations and building strong relationships in order to move workers to action.
  • Build organizing committees through leader ID and strong leadership development.
  • Research targets and help prepare legal arguments.
  • Work with a small team to plan and execute campaign strategy.
  • Reach out to allies in the community and build support for the campaign.
  • Prepare and maintain work plans, calendars, files, reports and other records on a weekly basis.
  • Other duties as assigned.


  • High level ability to communicate orally and in writing.
  • Strong planning and time management skills.
  • Ability to create a message that resonates with workers.
  • Ability to work under pressure and with minimal supervision.
  • Must be well-organized and self- motivated.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and discern priorities.
  • Ability to make effective use of resources available to the union.
  • Willingness and ability to work long and irregular hours, including evenings and weekends.
  • Willingness and ability to travel for work assignments.
  • Valid driver's license and reliable car.

Preferred Experience:

  • Experience organizing in healthcare settings.
  • Experience and knowledge of computer programs (including word processing, spreadsheet and database software).
