State Affiliate Political Organizer

POSITION: State Affiliate Political Organizer (SAPO). AFT Washington is excited to offer the opportunity to engage with legislators, community allies, and our membership around developing and moving our legislative agenda. This position is responsible for driving member engagement in our legislative and political program on behalf of AFT Washington’s membership. This position is a result of a joint project between AFT Washington and the American Federation of Teachers (AFT).

Salary: $60,000 to $71,643 DOE and in accordance with a CBA

Under the direction of the AFT Washington President, the State Affiliate Political Organizer (SAPO) will work to strengthen the political and legislative education programs of AFT Washington and the American Federation of Teachers through:

  • Developing and implementing political programs approved by the Executive Board and the AFT.
  • Developing and implementing effective member-to-member communication and mobilization systems for political and legislative issues.
  • Identifying, recruiting, and training political and legislative activists among the membership.
  • Implementing programs to connect members with political candidates, federal and state elected officials, and ballot initiative campaigns.
  • Assisting with lobbying efforts during the legislative session, as directed or approved by the president.
  • Developing and executing political field programs and managing staff during election cycles when necessitated by grant funded projects.
  • Developing and collaborating on messaging and communications for political and legislative advocacy.
  • Facilitating AFT Washington’s participation in labor, coalition, and community groups.
  • Staffing and supporting the Committee on Political Education (COPE).
  • Implementing the yearly political endorsement and contribution process.
  • Increasing political contributions from membership (COPE).
  • Staffing events as assigned.
  • Staffing committees/councils as assigned.
  • Performing other related duties as assigned by the President of AFT Washington and the American Federation of Teachers.


  • A minimum of three years’ experience in implementing political, union, or community mobilization programs.
  • A demonstrated writing ability and the ability to communicate the union’s goals and objectives to affiliates and members.
  • Experience working as a member of a team, including planning and implementing projects with team members.
  • Working knowledge of Washington’s educational structure and its primary stakeholders.
  • Ability to travel as needed both within the state and to national sites for work-related activity.
  • Familiarity with use of databases and Microsoft Excel.
  • Understanding of the concept and use of a racial/social equity lens as related to individual and organizational processes, practices, and programs.
  • Recognizes the need for ongoing development of one’s understanding of institutionalized oppression, and values personal growth in this arena.
  • Ability to effectively reach out to underrepresented communities within the AFT Washington membership as well as the broader community.
  • Experience with campaign plan development, volunteer recruitment, and fundraising.
  • Familiarity with Washington’s labor community.
  • Familiarity with Labor Action Network (LAN) and Voter Action Network (VAN).
