Contract Administrator

About SPEEA - IFPTE Local 2001
The Society of Professional Engineering Employees in Aerospace (SPEEA), IFPTE Local 2001, is a professional aerospace labor union representing more than 24,000 engineers, technical workers, pilots and other professionals in the aerospace industry. Presently, our union represents employees at The Boeing Company, Spirit AeroSystems, and Triumph Composite Systems. Members work in Washington, Kansas, Oregon, Utah and California.

Organized in 1946, SPEEA is an affiliated local union of the International Federation of Professional and Technical Engineers (IFPTE).

As a professional union, we negotiate contracts and provide representation to bargaining unit members at work. SPEEA helps employees navigate workplace and benefit issues while advocating for and providing workshops and classes to help members advance their careers. Our union is a strong advocate for employee issues at work, with political leaders and in communities where members live.

The union is governed by a member-elected Executive Board and Council. Daily operations are handled by a professional staff directed and managed by the Executive Director. With union headquarters in Tukwila, offices are also maintained in Everett, Washington and Wichita, Kansas.

Contract Administrator (aka Union Representative / Business Agent)

The Contract Administrator is responsible for membership recruitment and mobilizing, collective bargaining support, grievance representation, investigative interview (Weingarten) representation, and other duties as assigned.


  • Provides advice to union members regarding their employment problems;
  • Investigates individual employees’ employment problems, including those subject to a pending grievance;
  • Provides individual employees with representation in pursuing their grievances;
  • Provides representation to individual employees in investigative interviews as to general misconduct allegations;
  • Participates in membership mobilizing for contract negotiations;
  • Implements membership recruitment campaigns;
  • Contributes to union communications such as the newsletter, bulletins, meeting fliers and website;
  • Conducts frequent worksite visits with union members and gives presentations regarding union programs, goals and activities.


  • Strong ability to communicate both verbally and in writing;
  • Possession of interviewing and counseling skills;
  • Strong analytical skills necessary to interpret contract language, investigate employment problems, and process grievances;
  • Ability to meet and deal effectively and persuasively with individuals and groups in a variety of stressful environments;
  • Commitment to improving the working conditions, benefits, and pay of represented employees as well as defending their rights;
  • Commitment to preserving and enhancing good, middle class jobs;
  • Ability to work beyond a forty-hour work week that includes evenings and some weekends. This may include travel around the states where we represent employees.
