Janitorial Lead Organizer

Based in Orange County, CA

SEIU USWW Is currently seeking a Lead Organizer in Orange County. The Lead Organizer, under the direction of the Organizing Coordinator, will work to oversee the team of organizers and members. SEIU United Service Workers West represents over 40,000 service workers across California. We have been on the cutting edge of progressive activism, by building the power of low-wage workers in service industries and in leading the fight for social justice on issues such as health care, housing, immigration and education reform.


  • Lead staff by example, setting high standards in work ethic and professional approach
  • Participate effectively with a team of organizers and researchers
  • Motivate workers and outside supporters to take action.
  • Training and Development of Organizing staff
  • Recruitment and development of workplace leaders and worker committees
  • Work with leaders and drive committees
  • Maintain accurate and detailed information on work sites and track individual worker info and assignments
  • Manage a database
  • As needed, gather information for legal action to protect workers’ rights


  • At least 2 years of experience in Organizing and Leading Staff
  • The experience of running and winning a campaign form beginning to end.
  • Ability to manage the work of up to 5 staff organizers.
  • Ability to build a team, to communicate clearly and persuasively verbally and in writing.
  • A good understanding of the labor movement and a deep commitment to improving conditions for working people is essential.
  • Strong commitment to social justice
  • Ability to effectively plan and implement work and manage time, as part of a team and individually
  • Ability to work long and irregular hours
  • Experience and knowledge of computer programs is a plus (including word processing, desktop publishing, spreadsheet and database software)
  • Driver’s license and reliable car
  • Ability to speak read and write Spanish and English with a large groups of workers is highly valued.


  • Salary is competitive and negotiable (based on the Staff Union Contract)
