Organizing Coordinator

Position Title: Organizing Coordinator
Location: Florida (Area Negotiable)
Duration: Full-Time

This position is a non-represented position and is primarily responsible for evaluating and training employees and leaders in the field as it relates to organizing. This position is also a hands-on position which requires day-to-day direct involvement in planning, leading and conducting organizing efforts for Council 79.

This position reports to the President and/or her/his designee and updates them on the progress of organizing on a regular basis.


  • Responsible for leading the Union’s organizing efforts in the most efficient, economical and effective manner possible.
  • Plans, assesses and oversees the progress and effectiveness of the program; guides staff and leadership toward successful completion of the organizing projects.
  • Evaluates, guides and develops staff on effective organizing.
  • Acts as a mentor to staff and members.
  • Develops and implements trainings and other activities.
  • Capacity to model and coach on all facets of the AFSCME Organizing Model.
  • Performs organizing assignments of all kinds and serves as a role model to new staff.
  • Researches potential organizing targets.
  • Analyzes data and applies other criteria to assess possible targets of organizing.
  • Conducts and may lead the investigation of organizing targets to gather data and information, build a list of workers, assesses worker interest and scouts out the physical plant without divulging the union’s presence.
  • Writes campaign plans and reviews them with the President.
  • Establishes goals and standards and makes appropriate recommendations on the organizing program to the President.
  • Leads and administers organizing campaigns by identifying targets and developing a strategic plan.
  • Directs regionally based organizing teams focused on public and private sector external targets.
  • Performs related work as required.

Education & Experience:

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a degree in labor studies, labor relations or political action or 5-7 years of experience in union leadership acting in an official capacity to plan, administer organizing drives, both internal and external.


  • Advanced knowledge of labor unions and organizing.
  • Advanced knowledge of labor laws, both public and private sector.
  • Advanced ability to plan, organize and coordinate work activities.
  • Advanced ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships.
  • Advanced oral and written communications skills.
  • Advanced ability to analyze research data and make logical conclusions.
  • Skilled in the use of personal computer and associated software.

Travel, Driving & Work hours:

  • Extended work hours and extensive travel are required.
  • Valid driver’s license required.

Salary and Benefits
AFSCME Florida Council 79 offers a generous benefit package. Salary will be determined by the skills, ability and experience of the applicant.
