Senior Political/Community Organizer
Political/Community Department

Based out of either office in Alameda, CA or office in San Jose, CA
with the majority of the field work taking place in the Bay Area

SEIU United Service Workers West is now hiring for a Senior Organizer in our Political/Community Department based out of either our office in Alameda or our office in San Jose with the majority of the field work taking place in the Bay Area.

SEIU United Service Workers West is a California state-wide union working on the cutting edge of progressive activism, building the power of low-wage workers and engaging in larger social issues such as immigration, racial justice, environmental justice and housing. United Service Workers West represents more than 40,000 janitors, security officers, and other service workers in airports, stadiums and arenas. The union is home to Justice for Janitors, Stand for Security and Poverty Doesn’t Fly, campaigns that have successfully improved the lives of thousands of low wage and immigrant workers throughout the country.


  • Support and empower workers to build their political power to positively impact their wages and benefits as well as larger social/political issues
  • Support and develop our member political committee
  • Identify, recruit, and develop workers to participate in the union’s political program.
  • Outreach to elected leaders & community organizations to support union campaigns and recruit them to turnout out for union events
  • Attend community and political functions as a representative of the union,
  • Coordinate union involvement in electoral and political fundraising work
  • Function as a lead field organizer in electoral campaigns to elect union endorsed candidates and union supported ballot measures
  • Assist with development of overall strategy for campaigns responsible for building, maintaining and mobilizing community and political support
  • Conduct community meetings and coordinate large community events
  • May serve as lead for another organizer or group of member organizers. Will be done with appropriate training and supervision.
  • Develop policy positions, drive key relationships with community allies and elected leaders


  • Strong social, written, and verbal communication skills, patient in pressure situations
  • Motivated self-starter who is able to learn and troubleshoot without heavy supervision
  • Demonstrated commitment to social justice and empowering working people to build political power
  • Ability to work long and irregular hours, occasional travel
  • Driver’s license and reliable car
  • Basic computer skills in Word & Google documents required, experience with PDI voter software preferred
  • Bilingual in English/Spanish a plus
  • 3-6 years prior labor, political or community organizing experience
  • Demonstrated ability to build worker/community member participation, drive campaigns, develop strategy


  • Salary is competitive and negotiable based on experience and staff union contract
