AFT-Oregon is a state affiliate of the American Federation of Teachers, AFL-CIO, a union representing 13,000 Oregon workers in faculty and classified positions in K-12, community college, and higher education in both public and private sectors.

AFT-Oregon is seeking a full-time Field Representative. Field representatives are responsible for assisting, advising, and training local leaders and activists in building a strong union. Responsibilities include developing issues-based organizing plans, building worksite leader systems, member organizing, negotiating bargaining agreements, handling grievance processes, political activation and education, and leadership development.

The ideal candidate will have three or more years of demonstrated experience organizing and bargaining with public higher education faculty, including experience negotiating contracts and handling grievances. Position is based in Portland but will require regular travel to the coast, eastern Oregon, and other locations around the state.


  • Assisting, researching, training, and leading on negotiations
  • Handling grievances, arbitrations, and administrative hearings
  • Developing local leadership
  • Mentoring and training local officers and activists
  • Collecting and tracking membership data
  • Build local power and membership involvement
  • Plan, lead, and participate in organizing drives
  • Assist locals in increasing local density
  • Assist in educating members on political issues and encouraging political participation
  • Assist with political action fund outreach


  • Experience with classified staff and with higher education faculty and staff
  • Contract bargaining, grievance, and arbitration experience
  • Ability to manage complex tasks and set priorities
  • Coach local leaders and membership, including for diversity and inclusiveness
  • Coordinate work of other staff as assigned to projects and activities
  • Willing to travel and work long and irregular hours
  • In possession of an insured vehicle and valid driver’s license
  • Dedicated to the labor movement, social and economic justice, and public education for all
  • Able to work with individuals different from one’s self
  • Able to communicate effectively in both verbal and written formats

SALARY AND BENEFITS: The position includes a generous salary (salary range $65,975-$84,238.83) and benefits package in accord with the United Employees Guild/AFT-Oregon Collective Bargaining Agreement.
