The Position
The Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) is an independent national nonprofit working to solve some of our planet’s most pressing environmental and safety problems. Our scientists and engineers develop and implement innovative, practical solutions to some of our planet’s most pressing problems—from combating global warming and developing sustainable ways to feed, power, and transport ourselves, to fighting misinformation, advancing racial equity, and reducing the threat of nuclear war.

The Union of Concerned Scientists is hiring a Campaign Associate to support the organizing and logistics of a partner-led effort called Science Rising. Science Rising is a nationwide, nonpartisan mobilization effort engaging scientists and science supporters in elections through trainings, organizing events and actions, voter registration and turnout efforts, and storytelling. This position would support the event and partner coordination, relationship building, and logistics that will help this effort build on its past success and make an even bigger impact heading into the 2020 election.

Responsibilities
Reporting to the Science Network Community Manager and Partnerships Coordinator, the Science Rising Campaign Associate will help manage the day to day implementation and long-term strategy for the Science Rising initiative. This includes building and maintaining relationships with external partners, developing content for the website and social media, identifying new avenues for visibility and recruitment, and ensuring our supporters have the tools and support they need to engage effectively. The Campaign Associate will play a key role in implementing strategies and will work closely with UCS outreach and communications staff as well as external partners and UCS supporters. Specific responsibilities include:

  • Develop and implement a mini grants program for individuals and partners to organize Science Rising events.
  • Provide logistical support for set-up, tracking, and follow-up from Science Rising partner gatherings & conversations.
  • Help organize training, calls, and resources that support partners in learning and coordinating with each other.
  • Helping to develop the communications and materials needed for effective follow-up with SN members and partners leading up to and following the election.
  • Collecting, curating, and promoting ongoing events, activities, and actions of Science Rising
  • Managing actions to ensure there are both evergreen and timely ways to participate
  • Curating and helping to create advocacy tools that support engagement in Science Rising actions; cultivating partners and SN leaders as contributors.
  • Assisting in the record keeping of Science Network member engagement and recruitment through Science Rising.
  • Helping to create any promotional materials and language for Science Rising
  • Support with social media strategy, content development, and tracking. Identify strategic ways to raise visibility and engagement on social media.
  • Working with partners and UCS participants, curate and promote stories that celebrate build upon the Science Rising narrative.

Requirements
Qualifications and Experience

One to two years of relevant experience in online and offline organizing, campaigning, or advocacy is required. Excellent written and oral communications skills and experience with writing for social media is necessary. Familiarity with WordPress or basic web design is preferred. Candidate must be highly organized, able to communicate with various stakeholders, and good at keeping record of multifaceted projects. Project management skills and being able to meet deadlines is required.

May spend extended periods at computer terminal. Position may require minimal overnight travel.

At UCS, comparable training and/or experience can be substituted for degrees when appropriate.

Benefits
Compensation, Hours and Location:
This is a full-time position based in UCS’s Washington, DC office. For those who meet all position requirements, the salary is around $45,000.
