Deputy Director

Detroit Disability Power's mission is to leverage and build the organizing power of the disability community to ensure the full inclusion of people with disabilities in Metro Detroit. We organize people with disabilities and our allies, train community members about disability inclusion and dismantling able-ism, and plan fun and educational community building events.

Detroit Disability Power is seeking a collaborative, experienced, and visionary Deputy Director to help plant and grow this start-up social justice organization. The role of the Deputy Director will be to work with the Executive Director to determine policy priorities and systematize internal operations, as well as lead external communications efforts.

Responsibilities

  • Research possible policy solutions for issues facing people with disabilities in Metro-Detroit
  • Work with Executive Director, Organizers, and DDP Members to strategize pathways to these policy solutions
  • Set up and maintain systems for internal operations related to communications, evaluation, and tracking of members and small donors
  • Work with the Executive Director to determine and execute external communication goals and messaging

Required Skills

  • Knowledge of disability issues, rights, and culture
  • Well organized and able to stick to deadlines
  • Excellent written & in-person communication
  • Deep understanding of policy and the political process

Required Experiences

  • 5+ years working for a social justice and/or non-profit organization
  • 3+ years as a leader in an organization
  • Experience in community engagement/organizing
  • Experience in policy research
  • Experience leading organizational communications
  • Experience working with elected officials

Nice-to-have Skills & Experience

  • Experience with small donor fundraising

This position is full-time (40 hours a week). The Deputy Director must be able to work primarily from our Detroit office. Pay is based on knowledge, experience and candidate’s education level and/or years of experience in the field. Pay range expected to be between $57,000-$60,000 a year. Benefits package includes earned paid time off (8 hours biweekly), holiday pay, medical/dental/vision, 403 (b) employer match and parental leave.
