Benefits Coordinator
Finance Department

Based in Astoria, NY

This position provides support and expertise in the areas of business insurance and member benefits. While specific functions are listed below, activities of this position span a broad range of responsibilities. The position performs work assignments within the Finance Department, interfaces with outside vendors, and works with other organizations. Although activities are performed within established guidelines under minimal supervision, the position works under the direction of the Bookkeeper and Secretary/Treasurer.


  • Assists with the overall delivery of the union benefit programs: including but not limited to, Workers Compensation; property insurance; general liability; disability, retirement; and life insurance.
  • Assist with member disability and life benefits - processing applications, determining approval or denial of claims, corresponding with claimants, developing marketing material and preparing reports and summaries on the program.
  • Assist with mailings, marketing activities, developing correspondence for members, processing claims, and preparing reports and summaries on the programs.
  • Assists with the development of benefit related marketing materials for members.
  • Answers telephone and responds to inquires as appropriate.
  • Performs other appropriate duties as assigned.

Qualifications - Minimum Required

  • BA or BS Degree and one year relevant experience or, AA Degree and three (3) years of relevant experience or, six (6) years of relevant experience.
  • Thorough understanding of union benefits, business insurance and risk management principals.
  • Basic understanding of health and welfare benefit programs including knowledge of 403 (b) plans.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct analytical research on a wide range of insurance topics.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with members and staff about complex issues.
  • Knowledge and/or the ability to learn Union's structure and Member Benefits programs.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with members, leaders, staff and colleagues.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment relative to sensitive issues
  • Able to demonstrate empathy when dealing with members and members’ families as they experience serious illness and death
  • Proficiency in the use of computer technology, Microsoft Suite and the ability to learn and use the Union’s software programs.
  • Ability to work overtime as needed.
