Operations Support and Co-Organizer

Are you interested in supporting a community empowered to advocate for collective issues? The Coalition of Graduate Employees (American Federation of Teachers, Local 6069) is a labor union representing graduate teaching and research assistants at Oregon State University with just this mission! We are hiring a permanent part-time Operations Support and Co-Organizer at 0.5 Full Time Equivalency (i.e., 20 hours a week) to support the local in its day-to-day operations. Earliest review of applications will begin February 11th, 2019. The anticipated start date will be around March 11th, 2019.


  • Bookkeeping, including payroll, tax payments, and assistance with audit and budget.
  • Record organization and maintenance.
  • Assist Organizer with union member and leadership recruitment and material development.
  • Communication with OSU graduate employees and administration.
  • Office management and other duties as needed.


  • Organizational and/or personal budgeting experience.
  • Comfortable with computers, programs (like word processor), and minor troubleshooting.
  • Communication with a diversity of people and organizations through multiple methods.


  • Union awareness and commitment to labor causes.
  • Community organizing.
  • Familiarity with institutions of higher education.
  • Record keeping (electronic and hard copy).

Ideal candidates will demonstrate the following competencies:

  • Initiative and self-motivation.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Commitment to social justice.


  • The position requires manual dexterity, auditory and visual skills, and the ability to follow written and oral instructions and procedures.
  • The majority of the work is in the CGE office, with occasional travel around campus and around Corvallis required.

This a half-time, permanent position covered under a collective bargaining agreement. Compensation is salaried depending on experience with a base salary of $25,000 at half-time. Benefits include health insurance and paid vacation, holidays, and other leave.
The normal workweek is Monday-Friday, and the normal workday is four hours worked between 8 AM and 9 PM. Specific work hours within that range are flexible, based on the needs of CGE and its employees. Occasional evening or weekend work is required.

CGE has historically organized around social justice issues and is committed to continuing that tradition and increasing those efforts. Recent examples of issues around which we have organized include: advocating for family-friendly policies including child care subsidies, expanded drop-off child care, and lower health insurance premiums for dependents; negotiating to include gender confirmation surgery on the graduate employee insurance plan; negotiating to expand access to gender inclusive restrooms.
