Executive Director

The SEIU Local 517M Executive Director position has overall general management responsibilities for daily operational activities of SEIU Local 517M, a predominantly public sector union in Michigan. SEIU Local 517M represents approximately 8,000 members covered under 109 collective bargaining agreements.

SEIU Local 517M is one of four SEIU Locals in the State of Michigan, and is an affiliate of the 2.2 million member Service Employees International Union (SEIU) which is headquartered in Washington D.C. Local 517M currently employees 12 full time staff members and has an annual operating budget of approximately $3 million.

The SEIU Local 517M Executive Director works under the general direction of the SEIU Local 517M Executive Board. However, his/her primary responsibilities are as assigned by the Board’s Executive Officers.

These duties typically include:

  • Daily supervision and management of local union staff (currently 12 employees)
  • Oversight of and responsibility for the financial records and financial operations
  • Oversight of legislative issues affecting the membership
  • Coordination of the local’s political operation including SEIU State Council functions as well as International political programs
  • Oversight of the collective bargaining processes with particular focus on public sector bargaining (PERA & Civil Service and the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB))
  • High level of interaction with the 19 person Union Executive Board
  • Continuous contact with elected and appointed governmental officials

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Contract administration and bargaining experience with emphasis on public sector unions
  • Political campaign experience
  • Legislative and administrative process experience
  • Experience with Civil Service Commission Rules and Regulations
  • Financial, budgeting, and payroll experience
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to interact with elected leadership, members and staff on a daily basis
  • Employee and office supervision and management skills and experience
  • Knowledge and experience in both internal and external organizing preferred
  • Ability to function and interact with people in a positive manner even in periods of tension or disagreement
  • Demonstrated ability to relate to and work with diverse groups of people in high-pressure environment
  • Flexible, creative and highly motivated
  • Ability to work independently within the context of a plan
  • Ability to meet deadlines in a high-pressure environment
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and projects
  • Ability to use basic word processing, database programs and email
  • Able to work long and irregular hours and weekends
  • Able to travel on a regular basis

Education:

  • Minimum of Bachelor’s Degree with emphasis on Labor Relations
  • Labor Union Skills / Experience or College Level Labor and Industrial Relations preferred

Salary:
Salaried position (commensurate with education and experience)

Position Requirements:
Long and irregular hours, frequent travel, occasional participation in special campaigns that require longer term travel and overnight stays, must have a valid driver’s license and a vehicle.
