Job Announcement: Strategic Researcher — Western Canada

The Laborers' International Union of North America (LIUNA), founded in 1903, represents almost 800,000 workers primarily in the construction industry. The Laborers' Northwest Region includes the Western Canadian Provinces of British Columbia, Alberta, Manitoba and Saskatchewan as well as the Yukon and Northwest Territories. The Laborers Northwest Regional Organizing Coalition (NROC) is seeking a full-time strategic researcher for union organizing campaigns in the construction and energy industries of Western Canada.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform comprehensive and efficient research with a variety of written and human sources to provide quantitative and qualitative information on developers, contractors, government agencies, and development projects.
  • Investigation and analysis of targeted developers and contractors including uncovering relationships with sub and general contractors, construction managers, developers, suppliers and awarding agencies.
  • Prepare well-written internal memos and external materials, including handbills and research dossiers in support of organizing campaign efforts.
  • Work with lead organizers and other LIUNA researchers to plan, manage, and execute fast-moving organizing campaigns.

Desired Qualifications

  • Demonstrated commitment to social and economic justice.
  • Capacity to utilize a wide array of research methods, including but not limited to: internet searches, public information requests, court documents, government reports, telephone inquiries and key informant interviews.
  • Quick learner with strong critical thinking skills; ability to analyze complex information.
  • Ability to successfully work in a team and independently.
  • Excellent computer skills, experience with spreadsheets, databases and presentations.
  • Investigative and/or strategic research experience in Canada or organizing with a Canadian union or community group preferred.
  • Background in construction, planning, policy, land use, development processes, is a plus
