Title: AFL-CIO Service Area Organizer
Reports to: WI State AFL-CIO President
Compensation: $35,000 - $40,000, depending on experience/qualifications
full health benefits, employer funded pension benefit, and paid vacation.
Start Date: January, 2010 [APPLICATION DEADLINE: DECEMBER 30, 2009]
Location: Three positions available:
South Central Wisconsin (servicing Dane, Iowa, Sauk, Columbia, Dodge and Jefferson counties)
Southeast Wisconsin (servicing Milwaukee, Ozaukee and Washington counties)
Central Wisconsin (servicing Adams, Wood, Portage, Waupaca, Marathon, Shawano, Langlade & Lincoln counties).
The Wisconsin State AFL-CIO is currently reorganizing through its New Alliance program, and in conjunction, is seeking to hire Service Area Organizers. These positions will be focused on union membership mobilization, actions and rallies, political activity, support for organizing, contract fights, and legislative initiatives. Service Area Organizers will be responsible for working with Union Affiliates, Area and Central Labor Councils, and the State AFL-CIO. During political cycles, Service Area Organizers will serve as the lead union political staff within their respective region.
Responsibilities
- Increase labor participation in mobilization campaigns.
- Develop new mobilization structures, or enlarge existing ones, in order to expand labor’s ability to create larger, more creative, and more strategic member turnout for legislative, political, organizing and solidarity-building actions.
- Work directly with Union Affiliates, Area and Central Labor Councils and the State AFL-CIO to develop and implement member-to-member campaign plans.
- Work with elected officials and candidates to understand labor’s issues and directly support the right to organize.
- Train union members and affiliates in developing plans for worksite mobilization, e-activist networks, newsletters and other communication systems to better educate union members on legislative, political, organizing or solidarity campaigns.
- Support area unions, wherever possible, in achieving organizing goals.
- Facilitate development of closer ties with coalition partners.
- Assist Union Affiliates, Area and Central Labor Councils and the State AFL-CIO to create new coalitions with other non-labor organizations where they may not exist.
- Build and maintain database(s) for outreach to local unions, community allies, and volunteers/activists.
- Build turnout for and coordinate labor-to-labor walks, phone banks, rallies, pickets, marches, etc.
- Prepare and submit weekly activity reports and budgets for any program-related expenses.
- Identify and work on obtaining additional funding sources for program materials.
- Lead strategic planning process and accountability measures with Area and Central Labor Councils.
Necessary Skills
- Minimum of two years electoral, union organizing, or similar union activist experience.
- Proven success in electoral organizing and research expertise desirable.
- Experience working with volunteers.
- Excellent interpersonal skills in one-on-one, small groups, and large group settings.
- Excellent computer skills, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint. Experience with online Voter File databases helpful.
- Familiarity in working with labor unions is recommended, but not a requirement.
- Grassroots legislative/lobbying experience.
- Flexible and highly adaptive to changing work needs and environment.
- Ability to be responsive to multiple interests and objectives originating from the Area and Central Labor Councils and the State AFL-CIO.
