Job Opening: Senior Organizer Leaders in Action - Nursing Home

Summary: The Leaders in Action Senior Organizer works as part of a team, within the Member Programs & Participation Department, dedicated to leadership development and member engagement. The Senior Organizer will lead the work of the Organizers focused on building member strength among facility-based long-term care workers: in nursing homes, adult-day health and other jobs. The assigned lead work is throughout Washington state, and the Senior Organizer will also have assigned turf responsibilities.

Location:  Federal Way, WA.

The Senior Organizer will be assigned to lead a group of Organizers assigned to help engage workers, develop worker s’ leadership skills, mobilize workers around  facility, employer-specific and statewide or national social justice issues and politics, and carry out the goals of the union, in the nursing home work sites of SEIU Healthcare 775NW in the state of Washington. The Senior Organizer will coordinate a state-wide program in more than 30 work sites, coordinate transition from the organizing to the representational phase for newly organized nursing homes, and coordinate with additional work teams on issue organizing campaigns. Contract enforcement and bargaining responsibilities are located in our Collective Bargaining/Employer Relations team and Member Resource Center.

The Senior Organizer will him/herself have a workload assignment representing several work sites in western Washington.

This position requires previous experience in leading campaigns in union, community, political, and/or advocacy organizations. The applicant should have at least 2 years experience managing, leading and/or coordinating staff; planning and executing campaigns using an issue-based organizing model developing and implementing staff training plans.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Personal commitment to the mission and goals of SEIU Healthcare 775NW (see www.seiu775.org and www.seiu.org).

  • Experience leading, supervising or directing staff as a peer or supervisor (at least 2 years) preferably using an issue/organizing model.

  • A valid drivers’ license, a working automobile, and automobile insurance.

  • A cell phone with NW regional coverage.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English.  

  • Basic computer literacy and a willingness and ability to learn the organization’s technology tools.

  • Willingness to work long, irregular hours, including evenings and weekends, is required, including overnight travel and assignments.

  • Willingness and ability to travel, including frequent travel within the assigned turf and occasional travel throughout WA and other locations, including overnight.

  • Strong personal planning, motivation, and time management skills and ability to work with people from other cultures and backgrounds.

  • The ability to exercise discretion and independent judgment are considered key components to achieving organizer performance standards.

Special qualifications:  Not required, but recruiting for bilingual fluency in English and another primary language of our members (Spanish, Somali, Russian, Tigrinya, Vietnamese, Amharic, Tagalog commonly spoken by nursing home members).

Compensation: Salary and benefits are set by collectively bargained contract; pay ranges from $55,000 to $65,000 (actual offer based on experience).  Benefits include fully employer-paid family health benefits & defined benefit pension, generous leave package, auto allowance, cell phone reimbursement, and other benefits.
