Democracy for America: Web Developer

Founded by Governor Howard Dean, Democracy for America is our nation’s largest progressive political action community. With more than 1 million members nationwide, DFA is a grassroots powerhouse working in all 50 states to change our country and the Democratic Party from the ground up. We support, train and hold accountable progressive candidates and elected officials. Our members are active in local and national issues as well as electoral races and we provide the campaign training, organizing resources and media exposure needed to make their voices heard.

Democracy for America is seeking a creative online programmer to support our online organizing and fundraising. This position will entail creation, administration and troubleshooting of our grassroots organizing software and its 100,000+ users. The ideal candidate is a talented engineer as well as an inventive self-starter with a passion for using technology to organize.

The Web Developer reports to the Technology Director.

Qualifications:

• Demonstrated ability to build internet scale web applications with Ruby on Rails or equivalent frameworks
• Practical experience with a relational database
• Strong knowledge of HTML, CSS, and Javascript
• Experience with a source control system like Git or Subversion
• Excellent oral and written technical communications skills – able to translate technical challenges and opportunities to English for colleagues with far less understanding of industry terms
• End-user helpdesk experience
• Team Player – enthusiastically pitches in to help a fellow staffer
• Strong project management skills
• Excited to do whatever it takes – including work long hours and occasional weekends – to ensure the smooth operation of DFA’s web organizing tools
