CAMPAIGN COMMUNICATIONS SPECIALIST

America's largest union, with more than 1.9 million members, is looking for communications specialists to develop and implement effective proactive media strategies for communicating with employees, community groups, and the public. SEIU is the largest health care union, as well as having significant membership among public sector employees and building service workers. We currently have opportunities in Miami and Hollywood, Florida; Houston, Texas; and Washington, DC.

Responsibilities include:

  • Working as part of a team to develop plans, messages, themes, and communications vehicles for organizing, legislative, and community outreach campaigns.
  • Developing and executing proactive media strategies for communicating with employees, community groups, and the public. Involves writing and editing press releases, fact sheets, and other materials; building relationships with reporters; responding to inquiries; planning media events; and training spokespersons.
  • Designing and implementing a direct mail program to reach employees. Involves developing key themes and messages, writing, and overseeing the design and production of brochures, newsletters, and other direct mail pieces.
  • Writing and overseeing the production of flyers, newsletters, and other materials for use in organizing and community outreach campaigns.
  • Developing a web site and other communications vehicles, such as videos, slide shows, and other presentations.

Minimum requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent, and at least three years of communications or related experience.
  • Excellent writing and editing skills, experience working with the media.
  • Freedom to work irregular hours, including weekends, as needed.
  • Knowledge of layout and design, web site development a plus.
  • Previous experience with the labor movement or other progressive political or advocacy organizations preferred.
