Doctors Council SEIU is the nation's oldest and largest union for physicians and dentists. Doctors Council is affiliated with SEIU. We represent the doctors who work in public and private facilities. Doctors Council's long and rich history of advocating for union doctors was added to in recent years with organizing victories that led to many new first contracts. With the successful conclusion of these contracts, we are now a union that is approximately half public sector and half private sector. Our increased membership gives us greater strength to work together for our goals. Doctors Council is also affiliated with the National Doctors Alliance (NDA), SEIU, whereby we represent doctors throughout the United States.

POSITION AVAILABLE:

COMMUNITY-LEGISLATIVE ADMINISTRATOR:

Description: Coordinate community, political and lobbying programs, based on the premise that political power is critical in order to improve our members' lives, and for the delivery of quality health care. Assist in implementing these programs by, among other things, developing a legislative outreach program, a political action committee, working on political campaigns, coordinating with our communities and aiding our lobbying efforts.

Requirements:

  • Commitment to building political power for working people;
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to relate to workers from a wide range of backgrounds;
  • Must be able to follow strategic campaign plans;
  • Must have some familiarity with the legislative and lobbying process and the ability to research, prepare and deliver testimony;
  • Recruit and train members to lobby effectively;
  • Under supervision, work with members to develop a legislative outreach program that builds political power in our members' communities:
  • Work on endorsed candidate and referendum campaigns as assigned:
  • Familiarity with computers, internet research tools, and Microsoft Office applications; Write and produce leaflets and newsletters.
  • Ability to coalition build and work with various coalition organizations, civic advocates and community groups to achieve common goals;
  • Build and maintain a program of coordination with various unions, healthcare, community, medical, political and hospital groups
  • Increase the visibility of Doctors Council SEIU
  • Develop and maintain a COPE program
  • Mobilize Member Political Organizers
  • Work with medical societies, professional organizations and medical student groups
  • Attend meetings and conferences
  • Speak publicly and develop rank and file leadership through the program.
  • Work on policy issues
  • Work on political and community issues, as well as on healthcare policy and professional issues.
  • Must be able to travel for extended periods, and to work long and irregular hours, including evenings and weekends as needed;

Qualifications:
Prior student activism, union or comparable staff experience in organizing highly desirable. Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in political science or related field. Healthcare, professional advocacy, legislative or political experience also preferable. Good writing and speaking skills important. Must have valid driver's license and insurance. Travel required. Evening and weekend work will be involved. This position may require extensive travel throughout the country and working in other states for various lengths of time. You must be a self-starter with the ability to work under supervision.

Salary and benefits: Salary depends on experience. Excellent full benefit package includes 100% employer paid self and dependent medical, dental and vision health care, as well as 100% employer paid defined benefit pension plan.
