POSITION TITLE: Senior Communications Coordinator

1199SEIU United Healthcare Workers East is one of the largest, fastest-growing, most
progressive healthcare unions in the country, and is looking for a Senior Communications
Coordinator to work out of the Baltimore office.
The members of 1199SEIU are driven by a mission to achieve affordable, quality
healthcare for all and improve the lives of healthcare workers. 1199's New Organizing
department helps healthcare workers join the union so they have a voice for better patient

RESPONSIBILITIES
Fulfilling Communications Requests
• Work with New Organizing staff to accommodate their campaign
communications needs.
Strategy, Planning and Follow-through
• Creating communications strategies, timelines and plans.
• Track those plans and ensure campaign communication needs and deadlines are
being met.
Staff Development and Supervision
• Oversee the daily work of New Organizing Communications staff.
• Work with the New Organizing Communications Director to regularly evaluate
communications staff and ensure they are getting the tools, training and
opportunities they need to grow.
• Ability to fill in and run the Communications Department in the absence of the
Director.
Literature Production
• Write, edit, design one-page flyers, brochures and other literature.
• Follow through with vendors to ensure purchase order process is followed and
bills are paid in a timely manner.
Media Outreach
• Write, edit and distribute press releases, letters to the editor and op-eds.
• When needed, make outreach calls to reporters and cultivate relationships with
media.
• Train workers and staff to be effective media spokespeople.
Paid Media
• Write, edit and produce newspaper and radio ads and other paid media.
Video Production
• Conceptualize, shoot and edit videos or coordinate with outside video vendors to
produce campaign videos.
New Media
• Work with designer and other team members to produce websites, text messaging
campaigns and other new media.
REQUIREMENTS
• Excellent inter-personal skills, a positive, enthusiastic attitude and a commitment
to contribute to a positive work environment.
• Excellent visual, written and verbal communications skills.
• At least 2 years experience working in communications for a progressive political
campaign, non-profit organization or union.
• Excellent ability to work closely with a team, accommodate requests from team
members, and assimilate input from multiple sources.
• An ability and commitment to modeling pro-active leadership behavior and skills.
• Ability and enthusiasm to take responsibility for whole communications
campaigns and see each component through to a successful conclusion.
• Deep commitment to the labor movement and progressive causes.
• Bachelor's degree or higher.
• Proficiency in word required, experience with design programs preferred,
proficiency shooting and editing video strongly preferred, ability and willingness
to learn media database technology.
• Ability to take good quality photos preferred.
• Must thrive in an environment with tight deadlines, high-pressure and irregular
hours.
GENERAL INFORMATION
Salary & Benefits: High $60’s with family healthcare coverage, pension, vacation/sick
days.
