The New York Hotel and Motel Trades Council, AFL-CIO, is the union that represents approximately 25,000 hotel workers in New York City. The Council works closely with its nine affiliated local trade unions from the following International Unions: OPEU, SEIU, UNITE HERE, IUOE, IBEW, IUPAT and USWA. The Hotel Trades Council is the strongest union, with the best contract, for hotel workers in North America.

We have built a rank-and-file leadership structure called the Hotel Employees Action Team (H.E.A.T.) System. The purpose of the H.E.A.T. System is to increase the participation of the membership in the union and to greatly enhance the union's ability to mobilize our members for large-scale action, in order to organize non-union workers, to fight for higher wages and better benefits, and to increase the rights of hotel workers.

Responsibilities

We are seeking to hire a number of energetic, intelligent and dedicated individuals for the position of H.E.A.T. System Assistant. The H.E.A.T. System Assistant will work under and assist a H.E.A.T. System Supervisor, and will work on all aspects of the operation of the H.E.A.T. System, including (but not limited to):

  • Assisting in the recruitment, training, and direction of rank and file leaders (H.E.A.T. Captains, and H.E.A.T Network Leaders);
  • Assisting in the collection of information relating to employers in the hotel industry, and the implementation of pressure campaigns against employers;
  • Assisting in the analysis of large amounts of data subpoenaed from employers such as payroll records, work schedules, time records, etc., to discover incidences of employer theft from employee wages, abuses of employee rights, and other contract violations;
  • Assisting in the calculation of back-pay claims, and the preparation of exhibits to demonstrate complex or large-scale employer contract violations in arbitration proceedings;
  • Assisting in the preparation of written communications to rank and file leaders and members, and the public;
  • Assisting in the logistical support for a wide variety of union events and actions (including strikes and picket lines).

Additional qualifications

  • Strong computer skills and a knack for learning computer programs by reading the manual (FileMaker Pro 8 knowledge would be especially useful);
  • Ability to write persuasively, clearly and concisely;
  • Ability to design pages and layout (Adobe Creative Suite knowledge would be especially useful);
  • Ability to juggle multiple tasks, work efficiently and be well organized;
