JOB ANNOUNCEMENT
DIRECTOR OF PUBLIC AFFAIRS

The New York Committee for Occupational Safety and Health is seeking a director of public affairs who will be responsible for NYCOSH’s public outreach programs.  The director will be responsible for producing a quarterly newsletter, a bi-weekly news update, writing press releases, handling press contacts and producing promotional and educational safety and health materials.  In addition, the director will be responsible for NYCOSH’s web site.  Candidate must be a self-starter, able to work independently and have a demonstrated record of press work.

The New York Committee for Occupational Safety and Health is a coalition of over 200 local unions and 300 individual safety and health activists in the New York metropolitan area.  NYCOSH provides training and education about workplace safety and health hazards to its membership, community organizations and the public at large and serves as a watchdog and advocate, monitoring government agencies with responsibility for worker safety and health.

Responsibilities

  • NYCOSH Newsletter:  Write, edit and design Safety Rep, the organization’s quarterly newsletter
  • Educational and Promotional Materials:  Write and/or edit handbooks, fact sheets and other materials produced by NYCOSH; and oversee production.  Write, edit and oversee production brochures, annual reports, posters, grants and fundraising materials and other materials.
  • Web Site: Maintain, update and produce materials for NYCOSH web site.
  • Media Relations: Act as liaison with print and broadcast media.  Responsible for promoting NYCOSH work through press releases, press conferences, public service announcements, and through original articles published in both the labor and mainstream press.  Also responsible for arranging appearances by NYCOSH board and staff on television and radio.
  • Watchdog Projects:  Conduct various other investigations of government safety and health records (OSHA, PESH, EPA).
  • Safety and Health Information Distribution: Compile a quarterly collection of news articles related to safety and health from various publications.  In addition, production of a bi-weekly news update and distribution of materials to international list serve.
  • Public Events: Promote NYCOSH forums and educational meetings through media outreach.

Qualifications

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Skills in maintaining and updating website. Must be computer literate; ability to work with and maintain data base
  • Excellent research and investigative skills.
  • Experience developing and implementing a public affairs program.
  • Experience working as a professional editor and writer, either for a labor or mainstream press.
  • Familiarity with the labor movement, workplace and environmental health issues.
  • Track record of placing successful stories.

Salary: $64,971 - $69,791; health and dental benefits; life insurance; pension. plus union negotiated increase as of 8/1/09

Beginning date: Immediately.
