Position Summary: |
The New Jersey State Federation of Teachers (NJSFT) is the fastest-growing education union in New Jersey and the largest union of higher education faculty and staff in the state. Under direct supervision of the NJSFT President, the Research Analyst will work in support of efforts to improve NJSFT members’ compensation and working conditions through the collection and analysis of data related to collective bargaining and public policy. The Analyst will also conduct relevant research in support of new and internal organizing. The Analyst will work in concert with other staff to synthesize these results for presentation to NJSFT and its affiliates at the local level. In addition, the Analyst will have responsibility to establish and expand contacts with relevant government and private organizations to obtain data and information, and to develop contacts within organized labor. |
Position responsibilities: |
- Identification, review and organization of employer financial documents to determine financial status
- Analysis of collective bargaining proposals and labor agreements, as well as economic and fiscal demographic data
- Ability to research and analyze public sector budgets, including local school boards, public colleges and universities, and the state of New Jersey
- Preparation and maintenance of salary surveys and analyses for NJSFT divisions and affiliates
- Preparation of salary and benefit comparisons for various occupations and levels of employment
- Assistance with the development and maintenance of tools for negotiators and local leaders related to bargaining and/or legislative and policy considerations
- Preparation of written articles or reports for publication by the NJSFT or its affiliates
- Presentations to NJSFT affiliates, staff and allied organizations based on data collection
- Serve as NJSFT representative at relevant meetings and conferences

Primary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: |
- Excellent quantitative and qualitative analytic skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including ability to effectively communicate complex analysis and conclusions to a broad audience
- Experience collecting and analyzing data related to compensation surveys, reports and databases, employer staffing and financial reports, and labor agreements
- Knowledge of compensation and benefit resources
- Experience in the preparation of reports on preK – 12 education, higher education, public sector and healthcare
- A minimum of a bachelors degree in a related field
- Working knowledge of Excel to conduct analyses and prepare reports including the ability to create graphs of data in various formats
- Basic knowledge of the operations of the various institutions that employ NJSFT members
- Team player able and willing to build strong professional relationships
- Enthusiasm to work independently and a capacity to manage responsibilities to multiple stakeholders
- Strong commitment to social and economic justice
- Extended hours and travel may be required

Compensation: |
- Prior work experience in a union environment is preferred
- Familiarity with NJSFT, its affiliates, and other progressive organizations is a plus
