Position Overview
Successful applicants must have excellent communications skills, a willingness to work long and irregular hours, be able to be away from home for significant periods of time and have the ability work with people from diverse backgrounds and cultures. Given the dynamic nature of union organizing, campaign assignments can be anywhere in Michigan. This position may require relocation (within the state) for significant amounts of time. Prior union, community, or political organizing experience is a plus.

Duties and Responsibilities
The Union Organizer performs a wide range of duties which are focused on organizing workers to stand up for themselves and join with their co-workers to improve conditions on the job.

  • Do house visits and phone calls to workers on assign campaigns
  • Build complete and accurate worksite lists
  • Identify and recruit leaders
  • Activates/mobilizes/tests leaders
  • Build positive working relationships with leaders and activists
  • Manage assigned turf on an organizing campaign
  • Utilize worker power to combat employer campaign
  • Inoculate workers against the employer’s campaign
  • Record/track and report conversations, assessments, and assignments
  • Maintains and updates data
  • Chart and map facilities
  • Understand the basics of the National Labor Relations Act and other relevant laws/regulations affecting organizing campaigns
